Streaming Video from computer to PS3 [Guide]
« on: July 15, 2010, 10:38:53 AM »
The PlayStation 3 is a great multimedia High definition system, it has a range of things this video game console can do. Besides playing Blue-Ray movies what I like about this is it can stream pictures, music and videos from your computer.
The purpose of this guide is to show you a method I use to stream anime that has an uncommon format like MKV/ogg or has external subtitles. The PS3 itself is compatible with popular video formats like AVI MP4 WMV (others can be seen here), so you can copy the videos from a generic USB flash drive to the PS3, since it has two usb ports.

Before I continue, I just wanted to point out that you can purchase licensed Anime via the Playstation store (US), but it may be different in your country. If you watch Anime on Youtube, you can use the integrated internet browser the PS3 has and watch it from there.

OK, instead extending my post to a text wall of details and explanations, I'll give you my set up:
I have a Broadband modem that is connected to a wireless router, I use those to connect my PS3 and Main Laptop to the internet.
I use java PS3 media server that you can find here, where you can find the Mac, Linux and Windows versions\
Once that is installed and running you can see the PS3 media server icon on your PS3 under Photos, Music and Videos. Now you can browse through your computer's storage drives and stream your photos music and videos through their respective sections.

what makes this software so especial is that it is compatible with MKV videos and it displays subtitles, and if you have external subtitles it will add them to the video as long it has the same name as the source.

if you don't have a broadband router or a wireless network router like I do you can use this alternative
https://winamp.orb.com/orb/html/login.html
it isn't specifically made for the ps3 but it works.
you download the program, install it and choose the folders you have your content. Make an account and log in using the PS3 browser. This alternative can also work for the Wii console

I could do a long report on the many nice multimedia features the PS3 has but my post is lengthy as it is. If someone has a better set up than mine or better yet, if someone has a Xbox 360 guide for streaming media, Please make one.
I have a couple of goodies if anyone is intersted.
