Declining anime character design?
« on: September 26, 2007, 12:10:34 AM »
Is it just me, or did the appearances of the characters om the anime become progressively worse and cruder as the series progressed? By the end of the series, there is not even the slightest hint of Akemi Takada's character designs on the series. By stark contrast, the second Lupin III series lasted for 155 episodes, and to my knowledge, only two episodes looked different from the rest (this was only because Hayao Miyazaki was the animation director for said episodes). Nearly all the animation directors of Ranma 1/2 at least tried to remain faithful to Atsuko Nakajima's character designs. On the other hand, only 2 animation directors (Akemi Takada and Asami Endo) actually remained faithful to the character designs for Urusei Yatsura. Some of the later UY episodes, despite being entertaining, were very crudely drawn. Everytime the characters get angry or sad, anime cliches are always used. For example, the characters' eyes are always bulging if they're angry, or their mouths are huge and water is gushing from their eyes when they're crying. It's as if the show's crew no longer cared about the quality of the animation; they seemed to be more concerned with style over substance. :-\

So, I guess the real question is: what was the purpose of having multiple animation directors when there are numerous anime shows as long as or longer than UY that look consistently the same from beginning to end?

P.S.
I'm not saying that the crudely animated episodes are bad. I'm just saying that the crude looks of the characters late in the series are distracting at times.

I thought you knew Necron :?http://www.furinkan.com/features/articles/director1.html

I think that the best animation drawn was the 5th movie and two ovas

but yes I think sometimes they drew the characters in a "Lazy" way for instance in episode 194 (the pre-ending) the characters were drawn horribly in my opinion,

up to this point, UY has had the most dramatical changes that I've seen

in the 6th movie was the part where the style changed again for obvious reasons

I was aware there were multiple animation directors. I'm just curious as to why they needed so many, and why they gradually drifted away from the original character designs.
