For many of us,we believe that lum's relationship with ataru has been the same througout all

well in the manga or the anime there was a point in the story where Lum admits that she really loved Ataru.

So some doubts came out.
so my theory is: "Did lum really love ataru from the start or she was actually keeping a promise"

well let's jump back when Lum was with Rei.

As we all remember Lum Hatted Rei for his treachary so she left his eventually left him.

So there was gap in lum's heart that Rei left to her. So she Gave her life to a total stranger who proposed to her,Ataru.

What I belive this theory is that Lum Was keeping mariage porposal,wich Ataru did,and taking it seriously

This would mean for Lum that She didn't Have any bond with Rei, And she was happily living with a total stranger that would shield her from Rei.

It came up to the poin that, keeping a promise wasn't as hard anymore because Lum Actually Loved Ataru and cared what happened to him.

From the first episode I think Lum was with Ataru because marriage proposals were very important in her planet. And Lum's love for Ataru and Ataru's love for Lum developed through the story. But the real love appeared before episode 10 (when Lum was dressed as a girl who wanted to date with Ataru).

You make some very good points, Janus. As far as Lum knew early on in the series, any man (including Ataru) would make a better husband than Rei.

Aye,necron99,the other day janus and me discussed this theory on MSN and there are a bunch of proofs of lum not loving ataru inda 1st days

Notice how lum seems as if she is only saying it,not because of love but compromise

Also lets not forget the multiple times she used blackmail to live wit ataru (although this is a debate point as it seems she was beginning 2 love him from there)

Acoording to our theory,the real love began when Ataru was tricked into thinking he had a female fan and lum had to prevent him from depression disguising herself (most of ya saw this in episode 10 of da anime,i offer ya the manga version from wideban # 2)

here is the scene where ataru began bragging about his fan

lum's dissapointment (she is barely awakening)

here is the crucial point where she finally awakened and began to love him

Lum saves the day

I understand the fact that they didn't love each other at first. I mean, Lum is a cute sexy alien, but people can't fall in love based on looks.
I think Rumiko made a good job in starting their love for each other a bit after the beginning. ^O^

When Ataru saved face after Lums interviention, he showed his appreciation to Lum by showing some affection.
(Yes, it was a really sweet. You couldnt help but want Ataru to continue to be man he was at that moment). But....
Prehaps it is a guilty conscious working overtime for treating her so badly most of the time. After every show of affection, he seems to need to counter it with some extreamely inappropriate conduct (In the next episode normally).

It seems to be a love story showing the boundless amount of pain Lum will endure to get her man. Ataru's part shows how the most disgusting perverted abomination of humanity (I'm being kind calling him that

) can slowly change into a indiviual worthy of merit.

At the end of the day, it's all good comedy and crafted so well as to make people care enough to write about it more than 20 years later.

Note - This is not an attack against the Lum/Ataru relashionship, its just how I see it. Please do not crucify me

Wait a minute... let's go back to the beginning...

I'm a firm believer that Ataru and Lum are destined to be together -- true soul-mates.

However, she was engaged w/ Rei for a long time and courted even longer. She eventually dumped Rei (I think it was the locket epi, when Rei swallowed it). That kinda goes against the Oni belief that marriage proposals are sacred. She misinterpreted Ataru's outburst as a marriage proposal and accepted afer only knowing him for only 10 days (the duration of the Tag Contest).

Now that's a true chance on love! How can she accept when she barely knew him? Was that a rebound thing? and from the forum string, we all agree that they grew to love each other -- it wasn't instantaneous. I don't think the anime answered this... did the manga? (or should I just over look this?) ???

Let's say maybe Rei seeing he has a lack of speech didn't even proposed to lum, so we could assume that they were never officially engaged, so dumping him was easy.

No... they were engaged. Ran was introduced to UY because of Lum and Rei's relationship. Lum "stole" Rei from her and ended their (Lum + Rei) engagement. Ran wanted to get back by stealing Ataru.

Rei was referenced as Lum's ex-fiance multiple times (in the anime). It was established that Rei was shallow and had a voracious appetite, and nothing more. He also changed into the Oni-Cow thing when excited/emotional... I guess she realized that and couldn't change him and called it quits.

Ataru is different. She was able to read him right... But that happened after they met. Did she just chance it, when she accepted his "proposal"? I think she did and maybe was stiill hurt by Rei and that Ataru was a rebound thing.

Lum Invader and Ataru Moroboshi - both from UY (Urusei Yatsura) - are the Best Anime Couple of All Times.
