Hello, fellow Lum-a-holics!

I'm currently watching Lupin III (and other Animes) and there's this episode that really reminded me of the first UY episode. The episode I'm reffering to is 94th of the 2nd season of Lupin III. There's this scene, towards the end of the episode where Lupin, the main character, uses a thin rope with a fish hook on his "girlfriend" (Fujiko), who happens to be mad at him for ruining her plans. What happens next is quite similar to UY, since Fujiko loses her bra. Unlike Lum, Fujiko's breasts aren't exposed but this scene felt as if I was watching Lum and Ataru in a different setting.

I searched for a Youtube video to show you the scene I'm talking about but there doesn't seem to be one.

Well, anyways if you know what I'm talking about, please share your thoughts. ;)

Maybe the animators more than Rumiko: the original manga has Ataru accidentally pulling her top off with his hand during the game of tag (it was also about the 4th or 5th day of the match).

Is it possible that members of the Lupin III animation staff wound up working on UY? That might explain any sameness in presentation and atmosphere that you're detecting. Just a guess.

^ Thanks Veehive for the explanation but that doesn't seem the case since UY and Lupin III have no staff in common. So could it be that the UY animators copied Lupin III and got the approval of Rumiko Takahashi?

I dunno about approval, I heard that the earlier anime of UY wasn't really true to the manga. Maybe cause Rumiko didn't really control it at the time when she was younger.

I find that sad because I believe that the authors should have a saying on whatever it is that mentions or uses their art.

That's true, but by the time Yamazaki was directing it, it was more true to the manga.

It appears that Monkey Punch has also been taking notes from Rumiko Takahashi, Lumaholics

Here is an article from Anime News Network :

Quote
Monkey Punch's latest Anime, Cinderella Boy, premiering on June 21st in Japan, has a remarkable similarity with Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2.

The main character of Cinderella Boy, named Ranma (a rare name in Japan) transforms into a girl, however unlike Ranma 1/2, Monkey Punch's character transforms at the stroke of Midnight, not when wet.

Beyond this basic plot-point however, the two shows differ significantly. In Cinderella Boy, Ranma is an adult detective, and along with Rera his partner, he runs a detective agency in Giraffe City. An arranged accident causes leaves Rera and Ranma in an unfortunate state where the two detectives swap bodies at the stroke of midnight. With Ranma dissapearing and the beautiful Rera appearing.

Swiping? Homage? Coincidence? We'll be the judges of this situation, Lumaholics

If anything, I'd call it a homage, doesn't seem to overly similar.

Seto no Hanayome is the worst when it comes to copying other Animes (it's 95% UY). -.-'

Anyways, I would like to see what each author (MP and RT) have to say about the similarities between works.

I guess all that is normal in the animation industry. (especially back then in the 80's)

Scene similarity and/or characters is just normal as the animators usually have tight deadlines, so they are "forced" to use previous existing and tested scenes/characters, and give it just a little twist to it so that they avoid a possible lawsuit from the original creators/animation studio.

Btw, I don't think the mangakas have much authority over what's made or put into the anime versions of their work. I mean he gets paid to let them use his works as a base (storyboard) for the anime there's no more need for him to be around, basically because he's probably busy doing manga or other stuff.

Edit:Damn spelling mistakes.
