Manga Petition
« on: July 04, 2010, 01:32:58 AM »
What are you think about a Manga Petiton of Urusei Yatsura? furinkan.com have already at http://www.furinkan.com/uymanga/ a Petiton, but I think, it is not known by everyone. So I think making Youtube videos would be more help to spread the petition.

For Germany I have already created a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ukra951-bpk

thanks for bumping this.
Instead of saying negative things like Viz will never make this manga resurface.  We could think of it this way: why not ask another publisher other than Viz? Within the gaming industry I've seen companies pick up projects from other companies and I don't see the difference here.

Here is a list of the North American manga publishers I found in ANN forums

asking for UY to be published just because you like it, isn't enough. After all, this are businesses we are talking about there has to be some kind of gain if they are investing on this. Be creative and reasonable on telling them why should Urusei yatsura be published.

also AtaruLumFan you should make and English version of your video

that was my two cents worth

its good that we have more options, but that was not the point. As you can see there are plenty of fish in the sea, we could settle for one at a time to see which one bites.

If this could be solved that easily...
Quote
After requests from fans, Viz Media licensed the series for release in English across North America under the title of Lum * Urusei Yatsura. Despite a strong start, the series was dropped after 7 issues. The series was then reintroduced in the monthly Viz publication Animerica and because of the long gap the series was retitled The Return of Lum. The English release finished in 1998 and is now out of print.* The first 11 volumes of the Japanese release were covered, but several chapters were excluded and a total 9 English volumes of the series were released.

Anyway, Tokyopop and Del Rey would be the ones you should try to appeal, mostly because they have the money and they have offices in Europe.

But what would they gain by buying the licence of such old title like UY?
Both of the companies cited above are having economical problems, (well almost everyone in the media business), so this isn't the time to go around wasting money in something that may not work.

Btw, shouldn't you start a petition to Shogakukan???
Because after all they are the ones with the power to decide who published it in North America and stuff... well they own Viz... so I doubt they will give that licence to someone else...

* - legal obstacles, such as the expiration of a publisher's license to release content owned by another copyright holder. (For example, a novelization of a film that was released 10 years ago is likely to go Out Of Print for this reason.)

- the perception of the publisher that continuing to produce the work is no longer a commercially viable venture, or that there is no longer a market for the product.

"It is said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man from the mistakes of others."-"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
I wonder which one is true!?

Like Falling_star said that all the companies are going through tough times, and they would think twice now to pick this up. I guess its something we have to face and its no use avoiding it. Little by little, digital distribution is the way to go they save money on printing, shipping and paying a percentage to the retail store. But buying the license is the problem, let alone translators and editors.

The manga is already being distributed on Japan's itunes store as discussed here
and the actual link where they sell the UY manga can be found here

Like I've said in the other topic I think the manga can only be read using the Iphone/ipod touch and the ipad. That will probably is their selling point releasing content that only can be opened using such device. Also depending on their policy it could be one-time-download, meaning once you lose your content its gone.
but one can only hope they can go to that alternative if no printing is involved.

Has anyone contact with Shogakukan?

I think we need more Urusei Yatsura Fans, that would buy the manga (Personally i don't like reading books on iPhone or PC). Then I could make a english version of my video (and anyone check my english ^^).

So, I bump it,

In the next free times i would make an english version of the video.

In Germany the Manga publisher called EMA (Egmont Manga & Anime) that publish Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Forest, Ranma 1/2, One Pound Gospel, Inuyasha and NOW Kyokai no Rinne will not publish Urusei Yatsura, because they says: Urusei Yatsura is too old and no one would buy a manga from 1978 *grrrrr*, that was my intention to made this video, because they don't like the old drawing art..

Maison Ikkoku has the same art as Urusei Yatsura, so that makes no sense.

Petitions won't get a company to release a manga. Manga publishers are a business and will only publish something if they think it will make money.

in the EMA chat from 24 October, someone ask again about to release Urusei Yatsura:

Quote
Question: Why only the latest manga series are coming to germany and no older such as Urusei Yatsura from Rumiko Takahashi?

Answer: Of my knowledge we have this question already in the last chat. Urusei Yatsura has a very old-fashioned style of drawing, which we believe, it wouldn't get good in the audience. In addition, 34 volumes for such a venture is a very risk for us.
