What format do you get your anime?
« on: November 01, 2009, 04:58:04 AM »
Each person should vote for all that apply. From what I have read online some of the DVD releases of UY OVAs and TV series episodes were sourced from Video CDs and Laserdiscs, I don't know how true this is but UY was released in those formats originally along with VHS.

If you vote other can you list the format on reply. If you get it on multiple formats can you please post a reply especially if you watch a less common format.

I prefer DVDs, because they have a better video quality than the stupid internet videos. But not all DVDs are really good. Some of Animeigos Release (the TV Series) have a too big color contrast, so i cannot see some picture details (and yes, all the ripped internet videos have this too dark color contrast). So I think, the francais release is the best, but only 52 Episodes was released on a dvd box.

And the CPM Release of Beautiful Dreamer have the old 4:3 videoformat. The japanese and francais release have a better remastered video in 16:9 and includes a Remastered Sound in Dolby Sorround 5.1 (the francais release have only the french dub in 5.1, the japanese is still stereo). But the francais Beautiful release have many extras.

Here the remastered version of the trailer:

I used to watch anime only online, but now I have started to watch DVDs that I buy online. I have noticed that anime on DVDs costs a lot more compared to Western release DVDs.
@barney

If you know your dvd manufacturer and the model, instructions exists to make DVD player region code free.
Its not just region coding you have to worry about what television encoding systems are used; Europe uses PAL, America and Asia use NTSC. On this website (article 1.19) http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.19 it says that most PAL players sold in the UK are able to play NTSC. All DVDs will play on your computer.

@ Urusei0Yatsura

All modern dvd players can play ntsc and pal (and i heard the dvd player can play a ntsc video disc in pal mode, if the television didn't support ntsc, but all modern television can both of them).

I think the different on dvd ntsc/pal is only the framerate, the signal produce the dvd player. PAL uses 25fps and ntsc 23.98fps (or 29.98fps).

I like MKV because it can have more than one audio and subtitle tracks within the file. avi./xvid are ok, because it's supported by many devices or dvd players. Although I have the option to stream(or copy) my anime from my PC to my ps3, I still much prefer watching it on my computer. But I encourage everyone to purchase DVDs if possible, you won't complain about bad video quality there. As far as a region free DVD player, try Philips dvd players, most dvd players from Philips have codes to change region, there may be better ones, but this ones are the ones I'm aware

So to clarify you are restricted by region coding, region 0 is unlocked, its possible to play other regions by entering a code. Most NTSC players cannot play PAL discs but most PAL players can play NTSC DVDs. NTSC/PAL and region locking also applies to Blu ray. Always check the language when buying discs.

I have ordered a Playstation 3 so I will soon be able to watch Blu-ray discs.
