you take a class. My college offered it and I took 2 courses there. Basic Japanese I and Basic Japanese II

I believe there are more levels as well. If you want to learn Japanese you take a class, that's it.

I can read japanese, except 99.99999% of Kanji. Whether you ask me if I understand what I'm reading, I'll have to say not most of the times. Whoever is interested in learning Japanese, must take classes since it's the only way.

I'm just sounding-out Hiragana & Kakakana (occasionally recognizing a word or phrase as I go). I look up name kanji (which serves to practice looking up Kanji in the first place & I like finding out what people's names mean). Not ready to form sentences yet. I play with the IME when I'm feeling bold.

Still haven't found any Japanese language classes here in-town. Nearest I know of are at KentState (a 120-mile round-trip).

I know a bit of hiragana and katakana ( I don't know how to write them yet T_T)
a few words and common phrases
so I would consider this very low, even though I know many things
I have learned by self study using whatever tools that are at my disposal.
I like taking this slowly as a hobby

*edit* I found this page which I though was very interesting

I suggest that, if ur not ready for a class yet or cant find one, you should learn Hiragana, Katakana, and if possible, Kanji, in that order, before you try to learn anything else by yourself.

I can read Hiragana and Katakana fine, though reading sentences doesn't mean I understand each word (vocabulary) and I know a few basic Kanji (the 2 courses have about 147 but I don't know them all)

Lets just say I'm still at a elementary school level... when it comes to japanese... can't read Kanji, but for the others I do poorly enough to get at least the meaning of the sentences... XD
"It is said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man from the mistakes of others."-"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
I wonder which one is true!?
