Topic: What level of Japanese do you need in order to understand the UY anime?

I have always wanted to start learning Japanese so I could understand manga and anime without relying on translations. What level would I need to understand Urusei Yatsura TV series?

Honestly? VERY Fluent! Not ONLY would you have to understand formal spoken Japanese, but you would also have to understand Japanese slang AND you would have to have some knowledge of "Kansai-ben" (the Osaka dialect spoken used by Lum and Ten), AND be culturally fluent enough to get the puns and other wordplay going on.

HOWEVER, don't let that deter you! It's a tall mountain to climb, but all it takes is making one step at a time to reach that summit. Pick up some books on Japanese (not just the language but also the culture), find Japanese audio streams and listen (if only as background sound), listen to Japanese audio tracks (while reading the subtitles) on other anime. It can be done!
