Returning to the matter at hand,I usually thought Ataru made Lum sleep in his closet out of fear of her electricity powers and not because of some social taboo

In terms of the story/characters, I think that Ataru just didn't want to get that close at the beginning. I think u actually see the two of them in diff futons in one episode.

In terms of the story writer, that's just a common thing.

Ataru is worried to sleep with Lamù because RUMIKO TAKAHASHI WAS WORRIED !!

In fact, she said that, when she designed the tale for the first time, in 1977 it was unimaginable that a guy and a girl (both 17 years old !!!) were able to sleep together.

I think that, time after time, in Japain, the common thought is profoundly changed: in fact, Keita and Youko (the Inukami's main characters) sleep together !!
