For personal satisfaction, Episode 16, the first half, "Oh, Lonely Teacher" is the best.

First, Ataru gets a healthy helping of well-deserved abuse from Kuribayashi-sensei. Especially because Sensei does it because of Ataru's ill-mannered treatment of Lum.

Then, it is the wonderful chance to take Lum on a date. Sure, Lum was put up to it. But she acts the part so well. Oh, how delightful to have that chance!

Of course, I cut off the playback right as Lum is asking for a good night's kiss, but hey, it is the dream of all of us to kiss Lum at least once--isn't it?

I liked that episode too... I even noticed that the artwork looks better in that and some other episodes. And, in the Italian version, Lum is dubbed by a different person, which is far better than the usual one: I've always wondered why they didn't dub her with that voice.

A friend of mine could kill you for saying that Roberta Gallina (she should be the dubber of Lum inÂ that episode) is better of Rosalinda Galli (the dubber of Lum for 2/3 of the Italian serie)!
He loves that voice, even more than the japanese (that fool!! }:|)
I liked very much the dubbing of Rosalinda Galli, she was very, very good in her performance...
Roberta Gallina had a better voice (well, maybe not really better...more suitable!!), but was not so good; I think she was lacking in experience, she may improuve a lot!!
Certainly she was better of the dubber of the third part (in Italy only three season of 5 have been dubbed, each one with a different crew!!

), she was terrible!!! }:| I think that voice could have been that of a man!!! ;(

Yep, I agree... Roberta Gallina's voice was better, but she sounded somehow inexperienced. She sounds far more "cute and innocent" than Rosalinda Galli's, maybe that's why I liked it. Never heard about that third dubber, though looks like it wasn't that much of a loss

However, after you've heard Fumi Hirano... every other dubber sucks!

I hate when that happens. The dubbed-ness...Ranma was also horribly mutilated too. }:| groar groar.

That episode and a few others were re-dubbed because the actual Italian publisher..."lost" the previous ones!!!

What a distracted bunch of guys, aren't they??? }:| }:|
Not only Lum's, all the characters voice in those episodes was changed...
Too bad, the first crew was the best, especially Ataru was dubbed in the greatest way ever!!!

Dubbs sucks almost always, the only dubb that actually wasn't any bad was the portuguese dubb of dragon ball. The original voices are always better anyway.

Just to complete this topic, I believe that the writers and artists on this episode really got into the show. I can't prove it, but I feel as if they felt the emotions and really put their heart into the episode.

And in this episode, it's clear the writers and artists also wanted to show this relationship with some sympathy. It would have been way too easy to show him as an oaf and a buffoon, and have Lum make fun of him. But in the end, she still seems eager to give Sensei what he wants or asks for (hence ending up on the moon).

I still love this episode because:

1. Sensei is the only one to take Lum on a date--alone--and where she seems to actually be enjoying herself. Oh, if only I could do the same!
2. Lum writes a love note/invite to Sensei. (How I would treasure something she wrote, especially to me!)
3. Lum seems actually willing to have someone (other than Ataru) kiss her. (Oh, if only!!)
4. The artists really go all out portraying the romance of Lum.

No question--they really put their hearts into Lum in this episode.

To continue, my fellow brothers-in-Lum, notice how sympathetic we see Sensei portrayed here:

I mean, look how incredibly beautiful Lum is. Sensei is shown doing exactly what I would do--sit stunned! (Doesn't she just melt your heart??)

The writers and artists could have made him a drolling idiot, as they have some of Lum's Guards at times. But no.

Instead, just as the thought of being with Lum fills me with such joy, such a thrill just to be alive, we see Sensei feel this exact same emotions:

This isn't just some overaged perv hitting on a young girl, not in my book, not at all. This is the thrill that it is knowing Lum, and the wonderful blossoming of happiness that comes just watching her. (The scene here of her bouncing on the fence is so sweet, so endearing, she seems so genuinely happy!)

Later, when Lum asks if he doesn't want to kiss her good night, he cries:

Again, it's a sensitive and sympathetic portrait--I'd be bawling my eyes out too if she asked me that, as I fell to my knees in gratitude and to honor her.

Here, Lum seems to be having a grand time on the date:

so even if she's doing this to please Ataru, she's having fun. (I so much want her to have fun!)

Look at her here:

look at that smile! She's having a great time--and it isn't Ataru who's making her happy. This just gives me hope that I could too!

So I like to end this episode with this frame (rather than with the wall opening):

because this would be the ultimate moment, Lum, dearest, sweetest Lumu-sama, leaning over for a kiss from you. Oh, the heart melts! She is so beautiful, so divine, so tender and innocent!

Oh, to be there in Sensei's place--even with the humiliation--that will never take away those hours of joy together with her! Nor that fantastic moment to kiss her!

As always, she is my goddess, my queen, my love--Lum.

The way Kuribayashi makes his appearance at the beginning of the episode is a reference to Sanjuro from Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

Similar camera angle, pausing, his movements, facial expression, and gestures, the music...more importantly, his raincoat moving in the wind like the robes Sanjuro wore in those films.

Little hard to show here, but it would be similar to a character in an American animation appearing like Clint Eastwood with "Go ahead punk!" or wearing the trademark sarape and hat.

Kuribayashi was the teacher of Ataru and the rest of the folks before Onsen-Mark.
He had a lolicon crush for Lum and he ated Ataru very much that he wanted to put his life miserable.

I'm not that familiar with Kuribayashi because the best funny moments was with Onsen-Mark
