Portal Software updated to TP 1.0 beta 3
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:09:39 AM »
As of today we are running the latest version of TinyPortal with version 1.0 Beta 3. As you can see it's still in beta fase but as far as I can see, the software is working ok. Some things have been changed.

The TP team is happy to release beta 3 of TinyPortal v1.0!

It has been in testing for weeks, and have had a rather extensive cleanup on bugs found in the beta1 and 2 versions. Beta 2 was somewhat rushed version, so this time we allowed it more time to discover more bugs instead of getting it out as quickly as possible.

In addition we also added some new features that will enhance the portal functions, as well as some brand new ones. The foremost goal for this version though, was to make TP as stable as possible, and we think its close to that now. But as any beta it may still be bugs present, so we urge everyone using it to report back any errors that you find and also take backup before upgrading.

If you are using TP v1.0 beta1 or 2 you will discover a few new touches to it:

    * Multiple menus for Menu manager will allow you to use more menu blocks, each with its own menu. In addition functions calls exist to pull out a menu into custom themes - should the theme support it.
    * Global Tags are "tags" you can assign to articles, downloads, boards and topics. When an item is tagged, a special area in each item will list every item for that tag. Its a powerful way to link directly related items across articles/files/topics. You can of course do this manually, but by using tags, any changes will auto-appear in each item throughout.
    * Download Manager have had some cleaning up on the layout, "most downloaded for the week", and "most downladed ever" + "recent files added" columns are added, showing for any category. In addition the attached picture will be resized and thumbnail'ed, making it easy to show a small thumbnail in the file listings.
    * New text editor added and removed FCKeditor. The new one doesn't come with an image upload function, therefore a TP upload/browse function has been made, and is positioned conveniently under the editor. It will list ONLY your own pictures. The editor is quick and responsive and will not delay the script at all.
    * Searching articles and searching Downloads are now possible. You can access it by going to the normal forum search, then to the TP specific search screens.
    * Blocks have the old types of blocktype working again, as well as some new features to block layout: the option to define a set width and set height for blocks in a panel - making it easier to have same-height blocks.
    * Lots of bugfixes, refer to bugtracker for details.

The beta 3 does NOT support SMF2 - yet. Development of TP v2.0 alpha is ongoing and will benefit from changes and bugfixes made in TP v1.0.The goal is that TP1 users will in the future be able to jump right in with TP2. As SMF2 is quite a different script than SMF 1.1, lots of changes and testing will still need to be done, though we are confident it will be ready in beta stage in not too distant future.

For those that can't install/upgrade via the package manager, you will need to to:

    * Upload all TP files from the package.
    * run tp_install.php(the old "manual_install.php" is removed, use tp-install.php for the same thing.)
    * Do the SMF modifications manually as outlined in the tinyportal1075.mod file.

We also aim to setup a few TP demo sites over the next weeks, sites that show off and  documents how to do achieve certain layouts and effects possible within TP. In the meantime:

Enjoy Tinyportal v1.0 beta 3.

Enjoy!
