UY References in Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog)
« on: October 01, 2009, 04:42:34 AM »
Just lucked into this: there's a chapter of Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog here in the 'States) in which lead cutie Natsumi Hinata gets blasted by Master Sgt. Kururu with his latest invention, an "Oni-Girl" gun, which results in her wearing a tiger-striped bikini & boots and Oni horns, and suddenly starts using "darling" in her sentences (much to her bewilderment). Very cute story and art.

It's worth noting that series mangaka Mine Yoshizaki created one of the better "MyLum x34" pin-ups which accompany the latest reprint of the Urusei Yatsura series.

It's manga chapter 31 ("The Revenge of the Red Goblin"), in Volume 4 of the series.

Don't know of that story ever made it to the Keroro Gunso anime....

edit: and, after a little searching, I found it. Anime episode 43. Look under the YouTube section for the links.

second edit: to add scan of Keroro Gunso page with Natsumi reacting to her reflexive use of The Word (ahem!).

Ya, I didn't notice her use "Darling" during the anime.

I guess they had to cut a bunch to make sure the anime makers weren't sued.

Hmmm... no thunder drum things... does that mean she shoots the lightning HERSELF???

If so, please post that frame =3

Thank you for the 'break" (wouldn't want to double-post :*)).

These are read right-to-left, BTW ....

Let's take them in order: Natsumi has just been hit with the "oni-girl" gun blast:

... and her first words (same frame from initial post):

Her reaction to Keroro's demands (an Ataru's-Eye-View, perhaps?):

The final straw (being dropped through a trap door), enraging her enough to bring her to discover her full oni-girl powers (since you asked so nicely, UruseiNeo):

Thanks for sharing.

She is undoubtedly meant to be Lum, but this version is nowhere near as good as the real Lum from an anime and manga you probably know the name of by now.  The one in Sgt Frog looks has got nothing on the real Lum: she has a childlike face; short hair with ponytails; her poses awkwardly just like real Lum didn't; her body isn't in correct proportion and she is too fat to be Lum. She looks more like a chubby cosplayer! Also I can't imagine the real Lum talking in that way; whenever I read the sgt. frog version she always speaks in an awful cutesy girl anime girl's voice which is probably her hideous face.

That's kinda harsh... it's not like anyone actually said she was Lum, we were just excited to see such a huge and obvious reference.

To me, if u cover her head, she looks like Lum :P

It's just a parody after all. There would lawsuits up the *** if it was actually Lum (okay, maybe not, but they would get into some kinda mess XD)

I think they did a good job with her in the manga, I like it better than the anime version.

One thing I noticed too is the art style/proportions seems to be very similar to the real Lum/Urusei Yatsura manga in general.

LOL I sorta missed this comment before...
About the bold part, just check my avatar, which will explain why I don't think that's so bad. :P
And it's not that she's fat, she's shorter, so it gives that impression.

Sure she's not Lum, but she's not ugly either (then again, it might be the tiger stripes and the twintails making me talk like this). :P
Signatured postponed until I cba to make a new one. x.x

Another reference to Urusei Yatsura in Keroro Gunso. Took me a while to find this (had BAD INFORMATION regarding which manga volume it was in).

(pages read right-to-left)

While playing Parcheesi on a giant-sized Parcheesi board (more Keronian technology gone awry), Natsumi steps on a special board square ....

... and is turned into Ryuunosuke

To my eyes, this isn't as successful as the Natsumi-as-Lum homage of a few chapters previous. But, it IS an homage from Mr. Yoshizaki to Ms. Takahashi, and so I made sure there was record of it here at Lum-chan-dot-com.

I'm wasn't sure that character looks like Ryuunosuke, they look like the ordinary character without pigtails. But then I noticed that the T-shirt as a boy reads 'I love the sea', its definitely meant to be Ryuunosuke.

I did spot that but I thought it too obvious to point out. Also, having a previous cameo appearance of Lum  is further evidence of it being Ryuu.
