issues of nobility
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:25:38 PM »
I was thinking about this: Shutaro is noble (descended from a samurai family, so it's his title is comparable to that of Baron), Kurama is a princess, Lupica Idem, Oyuki is even a queen.

What about Lamu?!

If you read the Western translation she's described as "the princess daughter of the King Oni."
If you read the manga there is no trace about a possible peerage.

Yet too much contrast

- his father is the chief Oni, you can tell from the first episode, also several times (both in the series regular and in the films "Only You" and "Boy Meets gilr") there are the evidence that its power is almost absolute (is the head of the army and can declare war), so how can a simple argument enough to make it expel from the conjugal home?
In addition, the (rare) episodes set on Uru there is no trace of servitude in the house of Lamù, however, when she's carried off the whole planet is mobilized to rescue her, as can happen all in favor of a simple citizen?

- Lamù's mother also has its own private space ship and an army, as well as substantial financial resources (if it has the volunteer to face trial when the mother of Mendo roulette), but also on its behalf do not have evidence showing that it is noble

- Lamù has truly infinite resources: its staff was a UFO, although almost never wear them comprises a large number of jewelry (if one has evidence in the episodes "heartbreak crossing") and is able to pay an account equvalente the value of oil reserves on the planet earth, yet in the series is perennially penniless, why? !?

- when Ataru decides to marry Elle (she is a queen!) reveals to Megan to do so because in that way, he could become a sovereign and, therefore, create a harem galaxy, just its proverbial stupidity to exclude that it can extend this thought even on Lamù?!?

What do you think about ?

Most of all: what if Ataru realized that Lamù is a princess, do you think that he could change of attitude towards her?!?

Everyone in Tomobiki knows that Lum is a "princess". She's the daughter of the most powerful man of Uru/Oniboshi. No doubt about it. Now, the "problem" is that in UY, nobody cares about each character's origins: is he rich? Is he famous? And so on. It doesn't work like that in UY.

Lum is a beautiful, genuine, sexy, cute, gentle, kind, sweet, flying and electrifying oni and that's it. End of character characterization.

Now, about Elle: Elle can't inflict pain on Ataru. Lum can, physically and mentally.

I don't think ataru wouldn't  react different towards Lum even if he knew she was from royalty, heck, he didn't even have respect for shutaro knowing that he was rich and powerful. UY is one of the animes that the back-story isn't important because its more focused more on slapstick comedy

To Janus:
Ataru didn't care about whether Mendou was rich, true. But if Lum was wealthy like Mendou, I can bet that Ataru would have cared.

Unlike with Mendou, Ataru knows he may be able to obtain some amount of fortune if its from Lum.

Original post about whether Lum has money:
Yes and no. She paid the ALIEN cab driver using ALIEN money. So she could be very wealthy, but we've no way of knowing if that alien money is usable on earth.

It kinda explains how she can have access to so many unique alien tech but little earth goods in comparison.

Everything can be explained... but at the same time it can't...
We don't know what's the background of everyone/thing. So we can all just speculate about the origins of Lum and her family and get different results...

About the matter when she pays the Taxi driver... Its just all a simple matter of exchange rates... maybe 1 ISK (Interstellar Kredits) is worth much more than $1.000.000.000 dollars and so its easy for a alien to have some pocket change and be able to buy the entire planet.
"It is said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man from the mistakes of others."-"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
I wonder which one is true!?
