Ramblings about dubbed UY...

Any thoughts or feelings on the Animeigo Episode 1 and 2 dub and the CPM Beautiful Dreamer dub? I've only seen the BD dub and while it has it's many glaring flaws, I think it's of fair quality. However, from what I hear the Animeigo dub is an extremely painful experience. I have not seen it and am a bit hesitant to do so in the future.

I actually respected the BD dub. Its not bad as dubs go. Alas, the same cannot be said or the animeigo tapes. Lum sounds like Zha Zha Gabor. Ataru (and his family) have voices that would shame fingernails on chalkboard for irritating. The rest of the cast is unremarkable. This is not worth your time.

On the other hand, there are many moments when the true impact of the story's twists (finding out that reality is a sham) depend on spoken word. When viewing for the first time, not having to read all the subtitles as you watch and just getting into it can leave a bigger emotional impact.

Yes, I saw the dub first, first UY ever for me. Nothing like the first time. In fact, I remember saying right at the scene where Shinobu and Mendou discover the bridge is gone something like: "The Truman Show for freaks."

I also felt that some of the VAs were actually quite good. If you had never seen any UY, and only saw the BD dub, everything would sound completely natural. It did for me.

For example, I still find the Principal's speech to the gang to be very funny in a slightly self-deprecating way in the dub.

And while the original Mujaki voice is a bit more menacing and apathetic toward the kids, the dub VA acts Mujaki out to be someone who honestly believes he is doing the right thing...even though he probably is the devil himself.

I have a question. Who actually did the BD dub? Surely it wasnt Animeigo. The quality between BD and the TV episodes seem worlds apart.

Well, in Italy the three seasons aired have been dubbed by three different groups...
The first was the best :), the second fortunately mantained Lum's first voice but changed almost everyone else's :|... the third was an insult to the ears!!! :(
Lum voice was the worst of all...maybe was dubbed by a man... :?
And BD too had a new cast!!
Like the other 5 movies, another one!!!  }:|

"Italian" Lum has been dubbed with 4 different voices!!! :'(

:Shudders: I know what you mean, I've seen a few random Italian episodes from the ladder of what was dubbed and they were REALLY bad, Ran sounded like she had throat cancer, Benten/Lum both sounded like old ladies and I'm not even going to comment on the others...

I thought Animeigo's dubs were pretty good(accept I wish they kept Benten's Only You voice....) Lum's was ok...Mendou's seemed to fit pretty well and Ataru sounded totally insane when he laughed, Cherry's was funny but probably my favorite(ironicly because I hate the guy...) was Ryuunosuke's father, the way he was made to sound like an 'old-fashioned Japanese man' was halarious

I still think dubbs sucks and always will. The original voices are always better no matter what.

Dubs are ok...there are some that are horrible and some that do more justice to the characters than their Japanese Seiyuus do

Examples:
Star Ocean EX - The japanese version of this was horrible(Claude's Seiyuu screamed TOO damn much and that killed the series...) but in the dub they gave him a decent voice acter that fits his character, reserved but not a total wimp

Cowboy Bebop - I KNOW this is a totally overused exampe but hey it's probably much more well-known than SO-EX

Tales of Symphonia - I know it's a game but all of the Tales games are more like Anime than most RPG's, Kratos' VA Cam Clarke totaly brought his character to life(his Seiyuu made him sound emotionless or constantly angry) although Cam sort of...screwed over one scene he did a better job than his predecessor who didn't even put any feeling into it at all
Lloyd's VA(dunno his name but Robin from Teen Titans) made Lloyd seem a bit smarter than his Seiyuu(he made him sound totally dumb which is a cliche for RPG heroes...)
Genius' VA worked well for his out-of-battle personality, s/he delivered the sarcasm perfectly but really sucked when it came to spell chanting

Some examples of horrible dubs:

Ah! Megami-sama OVA - Terrible just plain terrible

Love Hina - :shudders: Keitarou was made out to be a total 'nerd' rather than a clumsey idiot

BSSM Super & SuperS - Although DiC did 'horrible' things to BSSM & R their dub was fairly decent but the dubs for the next 2 series were....bad, probably the only good voice was Prof. Tomoe he was just down right halarious

I'm not totally defending dubs, for the most part I can take'em or leave'em but I don't have the money to import everything, only stuff I love and don't want to see Americanized but I thought the 5 UY movie dubs were decent, I watched em and compared the voices to the Jap ones from the 83 season box I baught along with Only You

My only reason for importing NAMCO X CAPCOM...I have no life

I agree in full!!
Most Italian's VA are great, some of them are quite as famous as the best movie actors...but rarely anime are dubbed by such talents!!! :(
Only some special title is dubbed by famous (and VERY good) voices, like Cowboy BeBop ( :D)), for the other stuff they use newer voices, not bad as "sound" but lacking in experience...Lum in 5th movie final is really upset and screams aloud to Ataru, the Italian VA barely louded her voice...  }:|
