I know in the beginning, Lum thought Ataru was proposing to her. And ever since then she's treated him like her husband, but does that officially count them as husband and wife? I just wanna know.

You see, that depends on the prespective. From an Oni's point of view, they are married since Ataru "proposed" and Lum accepted. From a human's point of view, they're not even engaged since Ataru denies having proposed.

Personally, I think of them as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Also, keep in mind that once Lum learnt that marriage is through a ceremony on Planet Earth, she decided to follow humans' culture on this matter.

So, for the time being, I would say they're just a couple of good friends hanging around together that, from time to time, act like an engaged couple! XD

Ataru loves Lum, but the problem is that he also loves any other cute girl. Ataru's greatest wish is to have his own harem full of beautiful women, but also, he doesn't want to marry any of them, It's kinda confusing. As Cherry explained once, the girl that Ataru loves the most is Lum, but he hasn't realized that yet (or doesn't want to accept it). In several episodes Ataru has treated Lum as her authentic girlfriend. From Lum's point of view, at the first episodes she thinks of him as a husband, but as the series advances she starts to think of him more like a boyfriend, so he would not be scared so easily as before.
