Is Urusei Yatsura still popular in Japan?
« on: August 25, 2010, 10:24:18 PM »
Well me and my friend were talking about anime though aim and 1 thing lead to another and we ended up arguing about if Urusei Yatsura is still popular in Japan. Of course I said it was and he said it wasn't now that k-on,melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and the other popular animes of today are in charge. So im wondering if UY is still popular up to today's standards if it is what would it be on a scale of 1 to 10?

you can feel the degree of popularity of a saga by watching how many gadgets are bought by the fans.

After 19 years from the last (unedit) film the ones about Lamù & friends are still at the top place of this particular "hit parade".

So, "if one plus one makes two" ....   ;D

But this is not the point.

The point is: IS UY STILL POPULAR ALL OVER THE REST OF THE WORLD ?!?

this is the real "drama": japanese's comics market is so large (just the one of USA is bigger) that the mangaka do not care about what's happening out of their islands.

....... SIGH !!!   :'(

If UY is still popular in Japan?! I don't know... but if you ask if Lum is still popular in Japan... I would have to say "Yes, very popular".

If we went to a Midle/High school in Japan and asked the kids there if they know anything about UY... they would probably say no.

If in the same school you ask the same question to the teachers... they will probably say yes...

So what I'm saying is that UY popularity depends of what demographic group you ask.

this is the real "drama": japanese's comics market is so large (just the one of USA is bigger) that the mangaka do not care about what's happening out of their islands.

Indeed... the fact that they can make fortunes just in their regional market doesn't give them much incentive to export manga to the rest of the world. They prefer selling licences to crappy companies (I'm looking at you Viz/AnimEigo) that ruin the manga or anime (censur and other stuff) and then put it up to sell at prices that are just to high.

If Lum wore more "normal" clothing, she wouldn't be as famous.

That's probably why Ataru is not as popular as Lum...  he is just another perverted guy... in the world of anime... ;D

The king of them is obviously Lupin III... I want to be like him when I grow up... ;D

I think if you ask Japanese people if they've heard of Urusei Yatsura most would say yes, but if you ask people if they've seen it, it will be mostly middle aged people that say yes because it was most popular in their time being teens. I also think it may be getting another slight popularity boom because they started re-releasing the manga with different cover art and extra artwork and whatnot (at least they were when I was there 2 years ago). So I think it's still at least somewhat popular in Japan, but nowhere near as popular as it was back in the 80s.

I know they started reruns not too long ago so it wouldn't surprise me if they were still going on. And reruns aren't very common in Japan so it just comes to show how awesome of a show it was (and still is) xP
