A question regarding royalty...
« on: February 14, 2008, 08:40:17 AM »
I've noticed a lot of times when people talk about Lum, they refer to her as an alien princess. This question came to mind lately from reading the Rumic World UY forum.

Why do people think she's a princess?

I don't recall anywhere in the anime OR the manga where she is said to be a princess. Maybe someone here can help me figure it out. Maybe I missed it at some point in one or the other. Can anyone point out where the idea of her being a princess comes from? Like I said on the aforementioned other forum, obviously she was either from a house of high standing in Oni society (nobility of some sort) or the daughter of a respected military commander (after all, Daddy was to lead the invasion of Earth, and the Setsubun battle that introduced Benten). As far as I know, the only alien princesses ever declared as princesses were Oyuki and Kurama (Elle and Lupica as well if you want to count the anime).

Any help here? If I can find somewhere in the series where it states that she's actually a princess, I have to rethink a few things.
Excuse me, have you seen my mind? I seem to have misplaced it...

Most theories of Lum's nobility point towards her family been noble and/or just an exaggeration since she was da daughter of one of the Big Bosses in the oni army

That seems to be the typical response. Everyone thinks she's a princess, but no one knows why they think that. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it.

If you go to this site: http://www.absoluteanime.com/urusei_yatsura/lum.htm

It says under her profile status that she is an Alien Princess. Reading the second character description by scrolling down you will find this quote: "Lum is the alien daughter of an powerful space -warlord-"

This website is awesome as it gives details on tons of characters from tons of anime.

Do you think this is enough proof?

No, not really. Websites may be full of useful and useless information, but I'm talking about some kind of official source. Either from the manga, the anime, or the words of Takahashi-sensei herself. Really, all that a website can say is another person's opinion. Just another person taken in by the rumor that she's some kind of space princess. While I won't deny that she may be the daughter of a space warlord, warlords are not necessarily royalty.

Hmmm... well in the United Kingdom dub version (only dubbed episodes 1 and 3, not 1-3 1 AND 3. 2 wasn't dubbed)

In that dub, the guards did refer to Lum as Princess Lum but... that's a British dub so... not totally reliable either I guess...

Let's just call her a princess ^_^

OK, I have at last found the reference to Lum being a princess.

It's from the Urusei Yatsura LD 1-10 collected liner notes that came with the LD boxset.

Under the section 'Who are all these people anyway?'

Quote from: Urusei Yatsura LD 1-10 collected liner notes
Lum is the princess of the Oni, a race of very strange aliens who inspired Japan's demon legends during a previous visit. Etc, etc...

I always thought Lum was a princess because her father has his own army that protects his whole Planet. She is rich and I think I saw "save the Princess", refering to Lum somewhere in the Anime

Yes, AnimEigo's notes.

Considering she's a princess according to the people who wrote the notes and no one seems to have said they are wrong, there's no harm in her being classed as a princess as far as I am concerned.
