In the episode where Ran-chan invited Lum-san to a cafe (the one with the bumbling waiter), Ran-chan said "my mother was a real strict person. I really got it when I got home." This was referring to the bedwetting incident at Lum-san's house. The key word is "was". I don't know if Ran-chan used that word because she was talking about the past or because her mother had indeed passed away. Or it could be that something was lost in translation from Nihongo to English...

Personally, I think Ran-chan's mom is fine. It's just like the situation with her father or Ten's father. They don't come up in conversation, so it's like they don't currently exist...

EDIT: Soon after Ran-chan arrives, Lum-san asks her how her mother is doing (in an attempt to distract her from getting angry). That implies Ran-chan's mother is alive. However, Ran-chan didn't respond to her question... ???

To coobarate this assumption, I doubt Ran would be able to view negative imagery of her mother on daily basis (As demostrated in episode 103) if she was dead.  (8>
