Hey, why not?

Cast suggestions:

Ataru - Seth Green
Lum - Sarah Michelle Gellar
Mendou - Leonardo Dicaprio
Sakura - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Onsen-Mark - Danny Devito
Mr.Hanawa - Jon Stewart
The Principal - Ben Stein

Any other ideas?

I don't know about a live action movie, the actors could screw it up so easily. But if Seth Green could do Ataru's voice well, and get his laughs nailed down, then it could be interesting. One question though....who could play Cherry? The Stormtroopers would also be a hard casting job.

Okay, I'll do the crew since I have no idea who could play Cherry or the Stormtroopers (well, maybe WE could icon_wink.gif The director would have to be David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, or Luc Besson. Maybe even James Cameron with some assistance on the script.

Music score by Angelo Badalamenti or James Horner.

Director of Photography would be Freddie Francis or Frederick Elmes

Edited by Ray Lovejoy.

Special effects by Douglas Trumbell (2001).

It doesn't have to be a perfect copy of the anime or comics - just a good interpretation that remains true to the original stlye and feel, like Tim Burton did with the first "Batman".

Okay, cool. Where and when should it be set? I think a setting like early 80's suburban Detroit would do. ;)

Perhaps a fictitious American city (since I beleve Tomobiki is a fictitious Japanese city). As far as directing, I'm glad Jocko mentioned Luc Besson because after seeing "Fifth Element", I thought his wacky style and use of music would capture the feel of the comic and anime very well. Besides, did anyone else notice the Japanese comics in the background in one scene (not Takahashi's, though)?

As far as casting, perhaps Danny Aiello as Lum's father? I guess we'll have to leave Benten and Ran for the sequel.

Since Tomobiki is a fictional suburb of Tokyo, then setting the story in a fictional suburb of a place like Detroit or Chicago would work out nicely. The problem with a place like New York or LA is that they've done way too much.

I think a live action film would best be done as a remake of Beautiful Dreamer, or a combination of the first most important episodes and Only You.

I think if you put the live action Urusei Yatsura in an American town, then there would be no point in calling it "Urusei Yatsura" since they don't live in Japan. I guess you could just call it "Lum" or "There's Something About Lum".

There's always the old stanby name, Those Obnoxious Aliens, or Lum, the space girl. But I really like There's Something About Lum...

I can't quite picture Lum with hair full of stormtrooper semen.

Since U.S. audiences wouldn't flock to a movie called "Urusei Yatsura", "Lum" would probably be the best title. Location-wise, though, it would have to be in Japan. Who's gonna believe that there's an american town called Tomobiki with citizens who have names like Shuturo Mendou or Ataru Moroboshi? If you made it take place in an american town, you'd have to change the character's names, and that would suck beyond belief.

No it wouldn't, it would probably make things easier. Ataru Moroboshi would become Arthur Morris, and Tomobiki could be Caulfield or some store-bought name like that. Remember, it isn't the names, it's the personalities that need to be maintained. You need to think back and get some inspiration from the John Hughes teen movies of the 80's too!

UY was around before John Hughes started doing flicks. I know the kind of 80's-type feel you're talking about, though, and that would be a significant part of the production. On the names, though, I would agree with you if the film were being made for a mainstream audience. But if it's just for the cult anime crowd, it would suck to change names needlessly.

True, but I doubt that the cult anime crowd would seriously *need* to see a live action UY movie that much.

I think a live-action film should be made for a mainstream audience because it's simply a good idea with a great story and great characters.

Yeah, but realistically, it's more likely that there'd be a live-action DBZ movie in the U.S. first.

Touching on DBZ for a minute. After seeing The Matrix, it could be possible to have really good fight scenes in a live-action DBZ movie.

Is The Matrix worth seeing? I've been hearing conflicting things about it.

The Matrix has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen! It has a great story, awesome special effects and(best of all), it left me screaming for more kung-fu action!

I agree. Seeing "Matrix" put away any problems I had with cgi fx. And the fight scenes would kick ass with that technology. Especially the energy blasts. Kamehameha!

Ok so we have a whole bunch of good ideas here (I can't wait to see what Lum would look like in real life, rowr), now all we need to do is get a few million dollars together, become movie directors, and put the show together.

Somehow though I wouldn't expect it to be that simple.. heh heh
