'Only You' Inconsistency
« on: March 31, 2007, 12:20:41 AM »
I recently received a copy of Only You from amazon.com, and as I was watching it, I noticed an obvious inconsistency in the character designs. ww.imdb.com lists Yuichi Endo as the animation director of Only You. This obvious in the first 35 minutes of the film, but about 38 minutes into the films the character designs suddenly change. They actually improve, especially Lum's. Before then, they had semi-deadpan expressions (their eyes, especially Lum's, were always halfway-closed). They become significantly less crude, and they bear no resemblance whatsoever to Yuichi Endo's art style. I'll post some screencaps from the movie as soon as the "Submit Screencap" feature becomes available again, and then I'll be able to show you what I'm talking about.

At last, I have some sample shots to depict the inconsistency!

Here's what the character designs look like before...

And after...

But even, thats not the final characters design.

Example: They ditched down benten's green eyes, and oyuki's purple hair.

Why not make the animation stlye of the entire film look like the second pic? Considering that Yuichi Endo, whose style is depicted in the first one was, in my opinion, the worst animation director working on the series, it seems odd that they would give him the job of directing the animation of the film. The characters in the episodes he directed rarely change facial expressions.

I finally found out who directed the rest of the film. Apparently this film had three animation directors. In addition to Yuichi Endo, Magoichi Takazawa and Katsumi Aoshima were animation directors.
