Live action UY film
« on: February 07, 2012, 05:43:24 PM »
How would UY translate as a live action film? They'd make some changes knowing Hollywood!  ;)

Ataru Morobishi would be given some English name(i.e.Andrew Martin or such.) Which of the female characters you feel would fit the "mean girl" type?

I hope you've seen the live versions of Speed Racer and Dragonball Evolution...!

It would be total garbage if they did it with US actors and awful if done with Japanese actors.

Sad to say but cell phones and the Internet did not exist in Atarus' world and that does matter. The old Pepe Lepew jokes don't work in the modern world like they used to.

Ataru would just keep buying new PC's and cell phones after Lum zapped them.

Plus you will never get anyone to do Lum and Ataru's voices like Fumi Hirano and Toshio Furukawa.

Some things are best left alone.

Considering how the Ranma live action pilot did manage to adapt the weird stuff, I would not be surprised if an UY live action film appears even if it isn`t a good job

Animes are the bomb at Japan but that hasn`t stopped them from making live action adaptations, just saying

I do not think the series would be suitable for a live action film or series without some major changes and it wouldn't UY anymore. Ataru couldn't be a lecherous wannabe womanizing pervert. That might be alright in a comedy cartoon format but it wouldn't work well it a live action format, it would be too much.Lum probably wouldn't have green air, horns and wearing a tiger stripped bikini and go go boots like ataru being a lecherous womanizing pervert that would not work out too well in a live action format, plus there would be angry feminist and religious groups complaining about about the lum is dressed and the way Ataru behaves.

I could see a movie loosely based on UY .They could do a movie where aliens threaten to invade the earth unless a randomly selected earthling selected to be the earth's champion can beat the alien's champion at a contest and maybe forced into a marriage to save his planet from being invaded. It could be a romantic comedy have a similar feel like "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" except the male lead would be falling in love with the alien girl he is forced to marry.

I bet is if UY was made today instead of the late 70s Ataru would be trying to use Myspace, FaceBook or some other social media site to pick up chicks when Lum is out doing something and he would be carrying his cellphone with him instead of a pen and pad to store phone numbers. Heck it would probably be additional ways in which gets him into trouble. Like a Class mate sending him on a wild goose chase while they try to pick up Lum, Ran trying to lure Ataru away or Lum testing to see if he is faithful and zapping him when she catches him red handed trying to pick up chicks.

Yeah basically I think you are spot on.
You just can't do 1970's jokes in 2012.
They could redo it but it just wouldn't fly and neither would Lum.
Ranma 1/2 was easier to adapt because you had martial arts and people who changed into various people and animals after getting wet. That's a 1,000 times easier than the stuff that happened in Urusei Yatsura on a weekly basis.
Put into the modern context of progressive/socialist thinking and every special interest group will be out to kill it.
Also the fact that Ataru could have had Lum AND all those other girls but he didn't, made it sort of innocent.
In todays society he'd probably have had Lum and then chased girls.

You can't go back and for a new UY movie you'd have to.

Sorry, men, but I'm siding with CosmicKing on this one. An UruseiYatsura live-action movie is a viable concept.

The basic ideas that drive all the comedy and heartbreak in UY (the juxtaposition of gender norms, the satire of modern culture, the parodies of history and mythology) have never-ending comedic energy. Moving it into the Twenty-Teens gives UY new fuel with the advent of cell-phones, the internet, speed-dating (Oh Dear Lord, imagine Ataru let loose in THAT)... as I think was just mentioned.

Add to that: UY is old enough to be New Again. A new generation would get to discover UY. Which means, you'd probably have to do the Origin Story all over again, and re-introduce the cast as you go. (the movie has just written itself)

In fact .. the more I think on it, the more I'm convinced it COULD WORK.

A UY live action movie sounds strange to me... even more strange, is a live action Lum flying around and giving chocks.. eheh but yeah, it could work.

I also think that UY is 'old enough to be new again', but not sure if it should venture into the 3d world..

if they ever do make a Uy remake let it just be an updated animation one and NEVER  a live action.... We all know the horrors of LA anime

Heh, I've been dreaming of a live action UY movie for decades (as well as a much more personally satisfying ending to the series.)
First of all, I wouldn't treat it as "anime" but as a re-telling of the story using the strength of live action film techniques.

Of course it would take some interesting people to make it happen without falling on it's face.
My first choice for Producer:  Steven Spielberg (maximizing the human side of all the characters.)
My first choice for Director:  Mel Brooks of course, the master of comedy... and maybe we could get him to play Cherry, too.

Characters:  I don't keep up with the hot new young things anymore.  As far as I'm concerned the more unknown they are, the better.  Anyone have any casting ideas? (send links to pics of the prospective victims.. grin.)

As much as I hate origin stories, the film would have to cover at least the equivalent of the first 6 manga storylines to introduce a good percentage of the main cast.  I could see the film starting out like a 'V' rip off (intentionally) with most people totally freaking out (including the governments and military forces).  Then the fun starts when the Invaders make their demands known.

Hmm, I may have to start working on a script, just for my own peace of mind, and to solidify some of the ideas floating around in my mind now.

Well, If I ever won a large multi-million dollar lottery, I know where my money would go.

No. That would murder Urusei Yatsura.

Way too many special effects needed, very likely the characters would not resemble their cartoon forms in the slightest, the gags would look awkward, overall it wouldn't work.

And CGI animation film, maybe. I can see that working.
Fanfic - still in planning stage! XD

UY is the best show ever!

Well, most of the effects shots would be CGI work anyhow... and since the characters weren't drawn as typical Japanese, I think an international cast would work well for live depictions of them.

I can see the advertising previews now...

"You'll believe a girl can fly!  And throw lightning bolts at someone who deserves them..."  grin.

... and since the characters weren't drawn as typical Japanese....

This came up on another forum, and the answer is, "They ARE Drawn As Typical Japanese"! The "typical" design on anime characters is how the Japanese caricature themselves. When they caricature a Westerner, you'll note that they accent the (relative to their own physiognomy) raised bridge of the nose and the (relative to that raised bridge of the nose) sunken eyes: facial traits which are typical of Western peoples.

I'm sorry, but I don't think of caricatures as typical...  I understand why they drew them the way they did, and why they use extreme hairstyles and colors to easily identify the differences between characters.  But when I look at the UY characters I don't see a typical Japanese like the thousands I saw on the street when actually there.

The rest is all semantics.

And I've got first hand experience with the typical Asian's reaction to extreme Caucasian features... my wife has a very pronounced Romanesque nose... and when visiting Asian friends, the neighborhood kids used to peek in the windows of the house, rubbing their noses and chattering away... When we asked our friend what the uproar was about, they just grinned and told us the kids were remarking about the size of her nose... We all laughed about it as well.

When you look at other manga and anime, do you see a "typical Japanese" in their designs? Or not?

The rest is all semantics.

???

I looked it up to make sure.

semantics (Noun)
The branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.
The meaning of a word, phrase, or sentence.

I do not see what part of my post was ambiguous. Perhaps you could clarify?
