Have you ever cosplayed before?
« on: November 05, 2010, 11:59:51 PM »
Who as, where, when and do you have photos?

I've never cosplayed before because I don't know how to make the costumes and don't know of any anime conventions to go to.

No, as they don't make anime/manga/game characters in my (short chubby balding ugly old) demographic. :'(

Maybe as Cardbo/Danbo (the cardboard box robot from Yotsuba&!)???

Dressing up from an American TV series doesn't count as cosplay.

Cosplay is dressing up as anime and manga characters, L word is not anime or manga.

BZZZZ WRONG

Cosplay is NOT just for anime and manga characters.

Consider Star wars conventions, would you not consider those who dress up as wookies, Luke Skywalkers, Princess Leas, and Darth Vadors as Cosplaying those characters?

Furthermore you just completely screwed yourself over with the absence of VIDEO GAME characters, which I doubt even YOU could deny being cosplayable such as the Final Fantasy series, but they are neither manga nor anime in the sense of the word.

Wikipedia also says that "A broader use of the term cosplay applies it to any costumed role play in venues apart from the stage, regardless of the cultural context."

Counter Point? :)

Thanks, Neo but you were a little too hard in that explanation. xD

Anyways, Falling: you're not gonna say that you don't shampoo (I don't mean Shampoo from Ranma 1/2) and soap yourself, right? O.o

I'd still consider it to be dressing up, as its not anime or manga and I wouldn't want people turning up at an anime convention. Back to the subject: have you cosplayed?

Offtopic: In the UK they would name an anime convention after the place it was taking place, they had an anime convention at Manchester they called it Mancon, lots of homosexuals turned up.

So I work long and hard to make my costume to wear to my VERY FIRST convention last summer, an original character named "Hiten," and now you're telling me it CAN'T COUNT as cosplay?

I'm fairly ticked off now. >:(

Well Neo you know how this goes... it's just his view on Cosplay.

@cata: Well... yes I shampoo myself (even if I don't have that much hair to shampoo ;D ) and I soap myself... if you want to join me someday just bring a towel... bathtub is big enough... XD

@Veehive: This video as sugestions for your demographic. ;D at 1:48 XD

I consider dressing up as a character and pretend to be that same character for one day or event is cosplay. No matter where that character is from. Even if it's from your head, it's cosplay. This is my view on what is cosplaying. Now, whoever disagrees, has the right to do so.

But, when someone asks for "who cosplayed and what were you dressed up as?", you have to keep in mind that each one has their own definition of cosplay (we're talking about cosplay) so you'll find many costumes that you wouldn't really consider to be cosplay.

There are some people that don't consider cosplay if you don't change your appearance, like: someone and a character are extremely alike. And if that person cosplays of that character they don't consider cosplay because that person didn't change to look like the character.

Just to clarify, here's my position: I don't think it's correct to go up to someone and be like "You know this is a cosplay event, right? I just wanted to let you know that you don't count as cosplay". T

Like, I don't consider waterpro maipo footwear to be sneakers because they were made for long walks in camping activities, even though everyone's using them sneakers. But I'm not going to say "oh that doesn't count" if someone considers them as sneakers. Whatever suits you.

Anyways, thanks for the offer Falling but I have my own bathtub. And my own towel. xD

Sorry cata, but there I have to disagree with you.
What you mention in there is roleplaying, not cosplaying. Cosplaying is looking like the character, even if you don't act like said character.
When cosplay ad roleplay meet, that's when you have the true dedicated fan. :p

Who are you disagreeing with? That's not my opinion. I just stated some people's opinion.

And don't appologize for stating opinions. It's so stupid, like "I'm sorry for having an opinion" x'D
