I know I'm changing the subject a bit but why is Rei such a major character in anime? She hardly says anything at all!

I don't think I've phrased that question very well. Undoubtedly Rei is important in the story of Evangelion, but why do fans like her so much?

Cause she's awesome :p

I think it would be because she's a main character, plus the first female main closest to Shinji's age, therefore everyone sees her as Shinji's partner.

I guess fans like her because she takes the roll of the introverted, emotionless and dark/mystery (in the way that everyone doesn't know anything about her past) character... and I know that those types of anime girls are idolised in Japan Otaku culture... Don't ask me why... but I like her too... XD

"Whatever else, she needs to be painted in as a bitterly unhappy young girl with little sense of presence." Hideaki Anno, to Yoshiyuki Sadamoto on Rei's character design.
"It is said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man from the mistakes of others."-"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
I wonder which one is true!?

Here's something I never understood. xD

I think Asuka owns Rei when it comes to the better character showdown.

Knowing ONLY what I've read on the Wikipedia page about her, I would say it's because she's a tragic character, an underdog, almost a martyr in a sense. The fanbase identifies with her and lives vicariously through her.
