[EXPLAINED]Lum-chan.com instant messaging
« on: October 04, 2009, 02:16:10 PM »
Is it good idea to have an IM on this website?

I've always thought this site should have an open chat room that anyone can enter, although this is a forum site, sometimes its good to have a quick chat without having to wait for a response. I haven't suggested it because I've thought it would take an awful lot of programming to make.

I don't know anything about programming or computers so how realistic is this view? Will it cause a lot of slow down or take up a lot of hosting space?

Ah, well Lum-chan would have to devote a new page of this site for an IRC (internet relay chat) client.

The one problem I see on MANY forums with these, is that they always die. They're really active for the first few days, then they somehow become forgotten.

Still, doesn't hurt to make a suggestion, right? XD

I +1 on your idea.

I think I recall this site HAD one, and it went the way you mentioned, DaMan-san. I'll wait for confirmation by one of the long-timers on this site (I am an Old-Timer, NOT a Long-Timer :*)).

Well we had it... in 2 formats actually... one was a Chat button (on the site navigation bar) and because that didn't work (not that many people even if guests could join) then Lum-chan placed the chat at the bottom of the forum... to see if it got more people talking (using it) because with the 1st one we couldn't see if there was people in the chat or not, due to some kind of technical glitch... and that didn't work... so they pulled the plug... and it passed away without many even noticing it... XD

Now we have the shoutbox that I think its enough... Chat rooms... in this forum... had 1 major drawback... Time zones... XD

I think we should just set up weekly Skype conferences. Might be easier?

It's a chat client that you install on yout PC, Mac, whatever, etc. It's great for group conversations and meetings. You can either use text, a microphone, or go all out and use webcams.

Many YouTube guys I know use it for podcasts, group commentaries, rants, and even voice acting auditions.

Oh, and you can use it as a regular phone too (it costs though)

Seriously... we need a sarcastic smiley...

I knew what it was Sonic... I do have a web cam... and almost every web cam comes with the Skype software...

But still that wouldn't solve the time zone problem... well I've noticed that around 9 pm (GMT) we manage to get a few people (Europe & Americas) here on the forum...

Should we do something like a weekly forum meeting? To sell Tupperwares and exchange recipes? XD

LoL!

I also remember the chat feature. I clicked on it for the first 3 days. After that I gave up on the idea.

I think that the IRC sever would be the best solution, but if it won't be used (as said above) spending time to set it up will be just a wast of time. What about using a 3rd party IRC server and make a private group there?'
