As a fan of anime do you ever feel isolated?
« on: August 30, 2009, 09:35:23 PM »
If you live outside of Japan anime is not part of mainstream culture and is more or less unknown. Do you ever wish that you could easily find and talk to other people who like anime? Or wish that you could go to conventions?

I never thought about going to a convention, but some of my best friends like anime, so... and, then, there is this forum!
Anyway, I don't know how many anime-related conventions take place in Italy, but people who like anime aren't so difficult to find.

I'm 53 years old, chubby (still working on that) and balding (no hope). While there are a couple con's within reach (I live halfway between Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), I wouldn't DARE to show up, lest I be branded as a Lolicon! :o :police: >:( :(  Heehee!

(or: to answer your title: yes, I feel very isolated. Without THIS forum, I'd be dead in the water)

I feel very isolated... the fact that I live in an island doesn't help much... XD

I would want to go to a convention... but I would be kicked out... unlike our friend veehive I would be branded as something much worse... XD

I wonder which one is true!?

Canada is pretty weak when it comes to anime. Yes, it's definitely is popular, but it's only the mainstream stuff that plays on YTV or Teletoon (Canada's alternative to Cartoon Network/Adult Swim). Mainstream as in Pokemon or Naruto, either that, or just random stuff the comes and goes.

Nope. I've lots of friends who are into Anime. Also, there's a few Anime conventions in Portugal and also Animax which is a channel on TV that only broadcasts Anime. =D

as I've told somewhere before, I can't socialize with otakus they freak me out, LOL

but seriously, I don't talk to many people that like anime, it makes me exited to know that someone else likes anime or the japanese culture, but still I wouldn't associate with them as one would expect

It's probably because I'm so used to doing things alone, I guess

my opinion is quite the same with Janus.
and although I don't like to socialize with otaku, I can still chat with them, haha!!

I live in Taiwan.
there are lots of people who love animation, but I still feel quite isolated.

one of the reasons is that most animations I like are kind of unknown to most of people.

the other reason which is important is that, I don't easily tell others that I like animation, even if it's my friend.

Because many people here think that if someone like animation or something related to it, he(or she) must be an otaku, and the word "otaku" in Taiwan is a negative word for many people.

because of the second reason, I feel kind of lonely being a fan of animation.
it's really really hard to find someone chatting about old animations or other things related to it in real world.
But luckily, the best invention is there-- Internet!!
so I can still chat with someone on the forum.
it's really lucky!

by the way, few people around me like animation, and 90% of them are kind of ....weird? it's hard to explain...but I don't like to talk with them.
I think maybe it's because although I like the animation, they like it much crazier than me, so for me, they're too fanatical~
