I took my title for this post from a long-lost website that once honored our dearest Lumchan. That website's author's words have always seemed appropriate...for she is my Goddess and my Queen.
To answer the question, why do I love Lum...how does one summarize twenty years of adoration? One look at the cover of Vol. 27 of the Laserdisc collection is devastating...it simply melts your heart. The postcard of her leaning against the wall makes your heart ache with anticipation. Any number of episodes invigorates you like no other series does.
The early years of watching UY were wonderful--Lum was currently on TV in Japan. New shows would appear via bootleg every so often at our anime club. To dream of more to come, and what Takahashi-sensei might yet do for us, made every month exciting. It all reach a peak with the release of Movie 5: Final Chapter. As that revelation ended, I truly knew what it was like to love so much that nothing else really mattered...except her happiness.
I was even willing to give up on wooing her away from Ataru. If wanting Ataru made her happy, then so be it. No matter how much I detested Ataru's ignoring her, I would not try to imagine her just dropping Ataru for one of us.
However, I couldn't quite give up the dream of spending some time alone with her. So I chose to imagine myself as Kuribayashi-Sensei from Episode 16--the only character we get to see actually take our sweetest Lumchan on a date.
Sure, it's a trick and he gets messed up at the end, but he does go on the date...alone...with Lum. She even acts kind and submissive to him. Oh, the wonder of it. Oh, to imagine what it must have been like! The joy, the excitement, to sit and watch her, talk with her. Just be with her! So I use "Sensei" as part of my signature to remember that episode.
I love Lum because she is the most beautiful girl in the world.
I love her because she is strong, yet vulnerable. I love her because she's sensual and sexy yet never crude or shameful. She's eager, fun-loving, yet devoted. She remains one constant in this ever-changing world.
I love her because her goal in life is to make someone else happy. And she has...me and a thousand others around the world. Sure, there are other cute girls in anime. But look how she is drawn by the artists. It reveals how much they, the artists, love her. Other girls seem to be drawn just to make a living. Not so with Lumchan.
Even as a vice-president for a software company, I would sit my sculpted version of the divine Lumuchan on my desk, right next to my monitor, honoring her.
Of course, I couldn't explain the series and all to everyone who would ask what this was. Instead, I would explain that this exotic character isn't your typical geeky cartoon character that you might find at anyone's desk. Instead, this character, Lum, reveals the wonderful power that we have almost daily within our grasp to make this world of ours a better place. A place with no boundaries, no races, just fellow humans with a wonderful shared experience with Lumu-sama.
I learned this first hand with a Japanese roommate I had. We were watching one of the shows and he paused it, looked at me, and asked me straight out "Where are these women?"
At that moment, it wasn't a Japanese and an American--East or West. It was simply two human beings who knew at that exact same moment what an intensely wonderful feeling it is to love Lum.
Yes, she's worth it. That's why I love her. And I am glad there is some place now to say so. Thanks.
