I know what picture you're talking about, but is not that picture exclusive to the Wideban releases that came out after movie one? I don't know for sure, but I think this is right.

The thing is that Ataru is afraid of commitment. Just like Mendou freaks out in dark and cramped places, Ataru freaks out in romantic situations with Lum because he knows she's there for the real deal, unlike the rest of the girls that have no interest of having a relationship with him.
