Speaking Japanese Thread! ^^
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:54:29 AM »
Since there is a thread in this Forum for portuguese speaking members and since there is a thread where UruseiNeo-sensei is teaching Japanese, I decided to create this topic so you lum-a-holics can practice and learn Japanese. You can ask any doubt you have about Hiragana, Katagana, Romanji, ...

Remember: Don't break the Forum rules.

Enjoy! ^^

correction: どうもありがとうがざいます、カタちゃん。

I stopped reading at the second line cause it had Kanji :P

Except the last part shouldn't have "ã‚‹" cause that would make the verb you used be in the dictionary form.

It should be replaced with "ます" assuming you were talking in the affirmative.

Just as you asked...

Btw, Is it normal that when writing japanese in the same sentence be used kanji and hiragana/katakana characters?
"It is said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man from the mistakes of others."-"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
I wonder which one is true!?

Kanji most of the time represents more than one Hiragana character so it makes sentences shorter. BUT, the MAIN purpose of Kanji is that it provides meaning. For example, the numbers 1-10 all have a kanji.

Hiragana is used for Japanese words while Katakana is used for foreign words. Ex. Ramen is a chinese word so it would be written in Katakana.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Practice II - Time

いちじ - ichiji - 1:00

にじ - niji - 2:00

さんじ - sanji - 3:00

よじ - yoji - 4:00

ごじ - goji - 5:00

ろくじ - rokuji - 6:00

しちじ - shichi ji- 7:00

はちじ - hachiji - 8:00

くじ - kuji - 9:00

じゅうじ - juuji - 10:00

じゅういちじ - juuichiji - 11:00

じゅうにじ - juuniji - 12:00

いちじはん - ichijihan - 1:30

Ask some other uses what time it is. Round to the nearest half hour in your answer. Ignore pm and am.

ex: Q: うる星ねおさん、いまなんじですか。
UruseiNeo san, ima nanji desu ka.
Uruseineo, what time is it now?

      A:  くじはんです。
           Kujihan desu.
           It is 9:30.

Time to have some fun with the Japanese language and Urusei Yatsura (Lum would be the only one speaking in both English and Japanese, this due to her alien origin) :icon_mrgreen:

Ataru: (hitting Mendo with a mallet) どけ!

Mendo: きさま~っ! お前達に今日を生きる資格はない。

Ataru: んん? 聞くえんな。

Mendo: (drawing out his sword) 早く死に場所を選べ! きさまは死ぬべき男だ!

(Lightning strikes Mendo before he attacks Ataru)

Lum: 今日は,Darling,一緒に踊りませんか。

Ataru: ほっといて!

Lum: (seems to ignore such comment and proceeds to hug Ataru) 愛してるわ,Darling

Ataru: (trying to avoid Lum's lovely gaze) 愛ゆえに人は苦しまねばならん! 愛ゆえに人は悲しまねばならん!

Lum: (she seems angry by that last comment, she prepares herself to punish Ataru) じっくりと恐怖を味あわせてやる!

(Another usual day for Ataru and Co.)

guys, don't post stuff that people won't understand. At the very least, post in romanji for now.

anyways, cata, you were supposed to ASK the question in japanese too lol.

you wrote "shiji" han, i couldn't tell if you meant 4:30 or 7:30.

7:00 ---> shichiji
4:00 ---> yoji
"shi" is another way to say "four" but I don't think you can use it for time.

Btw, I have a question... when we say 44 we should say Yonjuushi or Yonjuuyon???

Same goes for 77 and 99

I believe you can use either but I prefer to stick with the primary word (yon/nana/kyuu) unless told otherwise (such as yoji shichiki and kuji). However, while both shi and shichi are alternatives to 4 and 7, Ku, I believe, is not an alternative but it is what is used for time, for example.

Notice, though, that when referring to 20-30-40----90 you use the first forms (ni, san, yon, go, roku, nana, hachi, kyuu)
