Title: My favorite Episode
Post by: Chette on November 23, 2006, 04:41:08 PM
Call me Romantic.... hehe I have a lot of favorite episodes in uy
but my most favorite episode is Episode 66. Happy Birthday My Darling
It's Ataru's birthday and Lum wants to know what he wants. He wants to be free from her for at least his birthday. So Ataru goes through the entire day never meeting Lum till an accidental meeting at night when he's happy to meet her.

Ataru was totally devasted the whole time thinking that Lum forgotten his bday
I just love it when Ataru felt something like this (good for him he deserves it :P)

although the ending was a cliffhanger! hehe

"Happy Birthday, My Darling" is now officially my favorite episode in the entire series, not only because Asami Endo (my favorite UY animation director) was the animation director of the episode, but also because it is without a doubt the most touching episode of Urusei Yatsura I have ever seen. The ending was perfect. And as you said, Forgotten, the rain does add to the mood. :)

I love that episode too! I am a portuguese Benten but I love romantic scenes but only if they are funny. If they aren't funny I hate them. Nice choice Chette. Welcome to the forum yatsura_lover!

This episode definitely deserves some credit. I'm surprised it didn't make it into the top 10 episodes. It is definitely worthy of being #2 (with "After You've Gone" being #1, of course).

This episode also features the best Ataru grin ever! :D)

And let's not forget the most memorable scene of all... :)

I just watched it again.  I have a slightly different take then Chette.  The sentiment is the same: Lum and Ataru care for each other.  But I don't think Ataru wanted to be left alone on his birthday, it just ended up that way.  It started days before.  Lum forgot his birthday was coming up in a couple of days.  He was pissed off about that and gave her the cold shoulder.  He laid it on thick... making her feel really guilty.  She cut class for 3 days and spent all her time away from him (that's rare! -- they are always together).  The brief encounters they did have, he never relented -- always yelling.  And then the rainstorm... and the ending.

Honestly... I felt sorry for Lum.  I think Ataru overreacted.  Yes, lum forgot, but he never let it go.  I'm thinking he wanted Lum to feel as hurt as he was feeling.  Sakura was right, he should have apologized... but then again it wouldn't have been much of an episode if he did.

On a lighter note... the "Only You" references were great!  Megane was hilarious!  I didn't catch this the first time, but Shinobu said something that sums it up the best.  (Watch it again to catch was she says).

This was a great episode... one of my favorites.

Actually this episode was very confusing for me the first time, like when mendo's soldiers told him that Lum had bought something, and Mendo said that his job was done outside in the pouring rain. But it took two or three re-runs to figure it out

My take on that... Mendo's an unofficial Stormtrooper.  He used his resources to stalk Lum and found out what was going on.  Since he's an Aries, he knew that Ataru's birthday was coming up.  Funny thing is, he knew it was the 13th of April... I'm guessing that it's a bad luck date and figured that Ataru would have been born on that day...?  I think his mission was to see why Lum was missing school and to see if she had left Ataru and possibly earth.  Since she was buying Ataru a present... figured everything was back to normal.

Ten, Mr. & Mrs. Moroboshi, Sakura and Cherry were the only ones that knew that Lum and Ataru were having a fight.  No one else knew for sure... right?  The kids at school were just assuming something was going on, but no real proof... just speculation.  Did I miss anything?

Where's the second part? Your story is too hard to believe when you know Ataru's personality but we can dream that he someday, he'll do something like that to Lum.

My favourite episodes are
"Happy Birthday, My Darling"
"Pitter Patter, Summer Date" (or what it's name was? Anyway, the one when Lum dresses up as normal girl and goes to date with Ataru for the first time)
"After you've gone"
"Scramble! To the rescue of Lum"
and lastly
"Goodness! Words aren't getting to Darling"

I hate the episodes (or at least the parts of those episodes) that have dancing in it...

What's wrong with dancing? Ataru's dancing moves are hilarious.

For me, the animation in these (dance) scenes is so poor that it ruins the scene. If only the animation studio could have animated these more "fully" (impossible with the time & budget restraints they faced)....

In thee dancing scenes I would only change the repeating dance moves because it ruins a bit the scene but I find it amusing when Ataru is on the dance floor.

maybe dancing scenes weren't good but we still can enjoy the music

I don't know how they make anime but when they need a lot of object like scene the plane of Mendou take off in Movie 2,they just make them repeat.
With scenes with many movements like dancing, i think they make it like that to save time.
