Title: Lum the forever hypothesis

I think hypothesis is the right word?

Anyway, after thinking about the movie, I think that I have figured out one of the key themes.

Tolerance

The tree represents tolerance, and when it is cut down, the town starts getting rid of Lum because she is an alien outsider. However, this is where I realised that the tree represented more, not just tolerance, but the fact that society tells us to be tolerant of different people, and when it isn't there, we won't be tolerant. However, at the end when they bring Lum back, they are fighting against themselves and their own intolerance to bring back Lum, because they realise that everyone should be tolerant by themselves.
