I've never watched or read a horror anime/manga and I want to. What do you recommend?

Well... Try Elfen Lied or Berserk.
Not sure if it qualifies as horror. More like lots of blood.

Well, you have Devilman, if you like mecha, Genocyber (it has a large amount of gore). And from Lady Takahashi, you have Mermaid Forest!. MF is very, very good.

A gorefest is not the same thing as horror. EDIT:A horror is scary, a gorefest is just has a lot of blood and gore. A horror can be a gorefest but it has to be scary to be horror.

Scary? I can't get scared by anime or manga. Anime hardly able to give that kind of sensation/emotion and manga... well manga you kinda looking at the pictures so you never get scared because you already know whats coming. ;D
Now there are some horror manga/anime that are just to much graphic to the point that it can be disturbing and those are awesome ;D

Darker Than Black (1st season) scared me a bit. Berserk's last episode scared me good!

Well, I finished reading Devilman and, in my opinion, is the manga horror theme in it's finest. I'd recomend VIolence Jack also. Both from Go Nagai (Mazinger Z, Cutey Honey)

I hope you didn't misundertood me... I don't have the Manga on physical format, only on my pc. I think Violence Jack never was released out of Japan...
but yep, the manga was translated by an English and an Italian scanlator. you have it here online on MangaFox - http://www.mangafox.com/manga/violence_jack/v01/c001/1.html
if you want to read on your pc, I think there is for download too.

Unfortunately, Violence Jack is currently being translated. Actually, I have the Violence Jack manga until the chapter 16.
