Title: Chat
Post by: AtaruLum on August 23, 2011, 08:57:08 PM
What about a live chat here? I would suggest FlashChat, it's easy to use and has a integration for this forum software: http://www.tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm

Good idea, ALF, although I also created a chat group for this community at the early days of August 2011

Here be the link :

Speaking of chat, it seems like people barely get on the chatroom called sparkz. I  think thats the name. U know the one thats already on here when u click on forums?

We should vote on anime to watch and arrange to meet in the chat room at a specific time when we have watched it.

If we wanted to chat could we not just have a forum for sharing skype addresses and join in a group? Also maybe try out watch2gether.com where a group of people can watch the same thing (i.e. anime) in sync and be able to chat? I used to chat on people from here with MSN but I don't remember who and my account has been deactivated through lack of use and I don't believe that MSN is around anymore.

EDIT: Well I found out that Windows Messenger was retired this month and has been migrated to Skype. see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/messenger/messenger-to-skype (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/messenger/messenger-to-skype)

I love XMPP/Jabber which is not owned by a company.

Lets make an virtual meeting. I post a link in the Shoutbox, you need no extra software, only a browser (Chrome or Firefox 40).

Ah, I missed this thread. I'll take a look into this. In the past there was a forum-chat but is was abandoned rather quick and the service (not hosted by me) got cancelled...

Any update on the situation? I like using teamspeak although it requires renting a server. I think it would be more successful if it was a general anime server instead of being for a fan group to what is now an obscure early 80s anime.

People have been using Discord recently.  I would recommend that, it's also pretty stable, mostly free plus it allows group speak chatting.

If someone knew how to use apache we could host a 24/7 server on a cheap desktop. I'm not sure if a raspberry pi is powerful enough.

Which Raspberry? The latest one packs quite some power.
The major issue you would get is probably with upload bandwith.
As long as you don't plan on sharing images in the chat you should be fine. Unless you live somewhere where upload speeds are not limited to almost nothing, then you'd have no issues.
You could also set up an IRC server, it's way less consuming in regards to reosurces if that's an issue.

If we can't get a private server, I second this. It's easy to set up, is available on mobile and has a browser version.

I'm looking into this after the weekend. Stay tuned!

Did you ever look further into Discord, since I think a server would still a good idea. I just received an email from Jaturu who saw that I was online and was trying to contact older members.

We want a live chat or a Discord server!!!
Also new embed codes for us to view the videos on YouTube in the forum.

The embed codes for the images works, why the code for YouTube doesn't?

I'd say a public discord server is the way to go now rather than try to host a live chat ourselves.

Discord is a good idea but it might kill the forum completely.  :-\

What about an IRC chat? Seems like IRC is eternal, as it's survived multiple decades of communication changes and is still in use today.
Granted, Discord did take some steam out of it, but I find you can't go wrong with a Forum + IRC chat combo - Moroboshi-kun is right that a Discord could potentially kill the forum, but an IRC chat would simply exist alongside it.

I second this.
Maybe some chat like chatango or any other that can be integrated on the sidebar of the website?
On the limit IRC is also not a bad ideia as KasugaKyosuke15 suggested.
