Depends of the person I'm recommending it to... but if they are new to anime I would probably recommend any of the big 3... (Naruto, One Piece and Bleach) or maybe something shorter and easier to follow.

I tried watching Bleach on crunchyroll but when they reached soul city the fight scenes were so long and drawn out I couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

EDIT: On bleach rather than actually fight in a fight scene they'd just say how they were going to own each other endlessly.

My favourite anime movie ever is Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone. The blu ray is cheaper on Amazon than the DVD. Wish I bought the Blu-ray now as I didn't know my PS3 played them when I got it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Evangelion-1-11-You-Alone-Blu-ray/dp/B002T5QMCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296648170&sr=1-1

Ok these are the ones that I have really enjoyed. It's not a complete list or anything. But I really enjoyed these.
Please keep in mind I NEVER watch dubbed anime except for DBZ and Tenchi Muyo when it was on Cartoon Network.
I only watch subtitled anime. I've watched Dragonball and DBZ subbed as well as the entire Tenchi series.
So all the ones I've listed are subs. None of these are mainstream anime like Naruto has become excepy for maybe
UY and Slayers.

Urusei Yatsura (obviously)
Azumanga Daioh
Jungle wa itsumo hale nochi Guu (there was a followup Deluxe I believe
Love Hina
Mahoromatic
Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai
Atashi n' Chi
Crayon Shin-chan (original Japanese not the US crap)
Di Gi Charat (not Panyo Panyo)
Ebichu! (really perverted so you've gotta be 18+)
El Hazard: The Magnificent World
Excel Saga (ecchi)
Puni Puni Poemi (ecchi)
Golden Boy
Tenchi Muyo (original Japanese not the Toonami ones)
King of Bandits Jing
Mouse
Kodomo no Omocha
Dragonhalf
Project A-ko
Photon: The Idiot Adventures
Ping Pong Club
Sister Princess
Trouble Chocolate
Slayers

I also recommend:
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Fullmetal Panic
Ghost in the Shell
Baccano
Outlaw Star

Deadman Wonderland

Also if you haven't watched Martian Successor Nadesico, you must, before cowboy bebop came out it was voted Japan's greatest anime series of all time. It is an underrated classic in Europe and America.

Finished watching Hyouka. EXCELLENCE!!! My highest recommendation. I re-watch various episodes for the sheer pleasure the show brings me. If you want a stand-alone episode to sample (other than episode 1, obviously), I would suggest episode 21.

As for the Fall Season? I watched episode 1 of Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Sukunai: typical KyotoAnimation beauty, but I think it won't hold my interest like Hyouka did. And, like so many others, I started watching Little Busters!, which I think will be The BIG Anime of 2012.

EXCELLENCE!!! is right, I can't really put my finger on it, but something about the show keeps you NEEDING to finding out whatever it is they're trying to solve, even if its as mundane as 'why the teacher got angry in class', so its a pretty fun show (animation and char designs are great as well) ^^

We are all just listing anime (me included). Perhaps we should include a little a bit about the shows premise and what you like about it?
Death Note - Fast paced supernatural crime thriller about a gifted high school student who gains the power to kill whoever he wants provided he knows their name and face. Great character driven, story and very good animation.

Ghost in the Shell
- Cyberpunk mystery with hypothetical philosophical discussions of future technology and exploration of the existence and nature of oneself and reality.

Un-Go, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Anohana. They all represent fairly unique anime (Anohana less so than the others) and leave a lasting impact on the attentive viewer.

Note that with NGE, one must also watch the two films "Death and Rebirth" and "End of Evangelion" after the anime to complete the series.

Anime, lately ... ummm ... I really haven't found anything that catches my eye for long. Looking forward to the 3rd season of Working!! (Wagnaria!! here in the USA) and will check the newly-announced anime of Kyoukai no Rin-ne when each appear in 2015. I'm doing more reading lately, and I recommend Monster Musume (VERY ecchi), Doctor Hitomi's Infirmary (somewhat ecchi), and BokuGirl (slightly ecchi).
