Well, the anime is full of great characters and it's a hard task to select only one of them... the girls are all extremely beautiful and each one of them has something you will never forget (and obviously Lum rules!!!), the guys themselves are quite interesting charas but Ataru is something completely different... :&
He's not strong, brave or smart unless he's chasing girls... :P
He's selfish, stupid, hungry, unlucky... :(
He escapes from Lum well knowing that he cannot lose her and want to "collect" every babe he can pursuing his master plan about his future harem, but when she is in trouble he is ready to fight entire armies trying to save her... :o
He is considered a menace to every girl, but the only time he was about to sleep with Lum he acted incredibly embarassed! :@
He is unable to show his feelings (and often he doesn't want to...) to the woman he really loves, going on with the babe chase, probably well knowing that he'll achieve no results forever... :&
Well, he is my favorite character because acts the way I ever wanted to be and will never be!!! }:|

Well, Atary-san isn't my favorite but the most stupid actions of him are just so adorable. Kinda looks like he tries, tries and tries....
However, the expressions of his face/body are so hilarious I can't stop laughing :) Without him the series wouldn't be complete!

Ataru is great, his personality is anwesome and i just love his laughing... he is really cool...it's a shame that he doesn't tell lum how he feels about her...

In 5th movie he refused to say that, endangering the whole earth and one of his deepest thought was "Why do you need I say "I love you" to understand?"

Actually, there are female versions of Moroboshi in some american tv shows...ever seen sex in the city? one of the main characters, Samantha Jones, TOTALLY LIKE ATARU...the only difference is instead of a slap on the face from men, she ends up sleeping with them.

Ataru means "to get hit" and Moroboshi means "falling star." The chances of a star hitting someone are pretty rare. His name is a metaphor for his cosmically miserable luck.
Its strange that the japanese culture and Indian (north America) culture use almost the same name giving system

Well save for Lupin, the others act like Moroboshi because they came many years after and have a nice 'rolemodel', I've always wondered if Ataru gave Happosai any 'pointers'

All the characters are great. Every episode I always wanted to see all of them arguing, scheming against each other. But Ataru Moroboshi is my fave. Ain't no one can be like him. One of the funniest scenes of him is when he and Kurama go back in time and visit Kurama's father. Moroboshi tries to get his face to be serious but can't so his face spasms cause its not used to being serious.

You shouldn't ask yourself such questions, UY could be considered the "Police Squad" or "Naked Gun" of the animation, along with "Excel Saga", "Abenobashi" and several other titles! :)

Ataru dons a magical glove in order to bop Jariten, but the glove is part of a magical pair. When Ataru finally dons the both, he is bestowed with an amazing and uncontrollable ability to super punch anyone coming close to him. Sakura and Cherry prescribe one way to remove the gloves. Have a match; to which Megane shows up in magical wrestler's pants and Mendou in another magical outfit.

I might be able to sympathize with Ataru more if he weren't so full of crap. His goal is to have a harem. There's a number of problems with this however:
1. Lum won't allow him to cheat on her.
2. Nearly every female character except Lum (and maybe Elle) hates him. Shinobu merely tolerates his presence.
3. Where is he going to get the money to afford a harem? His father has a minimum wage job and has constantly has to pay for any damages to done to the house.

I think I know how to solve problem number 3: He could challenge Mendou. If Mendou defeats Ataru, then he would lost Lum to Mendou. But if Ataru defeats Mendou... then Mendou would pay for all the bills that the Harem would have. Sorry for the bad English.

This is a little off topic but I've always wondered about this... If Urusei Yatsura roughly translates into "Those Obnoxious Aliens", why is it that the human characters (Ataru, Mendou, Lum's Stormtroopers, Shinobu, Cherry, Onsen-Mark, Mr. Fujinami, etc.) always come across as being infinitely more obnoxious, annoying, and dislikeable than the majority of the alien characters? Maybe I can understand how Jariten, Ran, Rei, Benten, and the Gang of Three could be classified as "obnoxious aliens" since they tend to be the most destructive, but compared to the human characters, they really aren't that bad.

Has Ataru ever flipped Lum's skirt (when she's wearing one) up in the anime? He's flipped up Shinobu's skirt on at least two occasions, and he has flipped up at least two other unnamed girls' skirts.

I thought the same thing! When I first saw an identical screencap of Ataru in drag from this episode (before I actually watched the episode), I thought it was Ran wearing way too much make-up. It's definitely the wig that makes him look like Ran-chan. Ran-chan is much cuter though... :D)

Do you suppose there's an alternate reality in which Ataru is completely faithful to Lum, and Lum is a flirtatious girl who asks boys for their phone numbers and addresses? Or would that be too weird, even for Urusei Yatsura?

There are a lot of possibilities,necron99,it could work for one of me upcoming tales at Nightmare Battle or DM2,anyways i am sure ataru is somehow faithful to Lum in the normal universe,da problem is that he really loves women so temptation is what haunts him
He tries to keep the flame with Lum by not exploiting da relation ;)

Believe it or not, I have found an anime character who is even more perverted than Ataru was when he was a kid. Look up "Dashing Kappei" on www.crunchyroll.com. Kappei flips up girls' skirts to see if they're wearing white panties (his favorite type of panties; he has good taste :D)).

Both of those videos are pretty good,it reminded me of the amv called "Come,ataru" which was a mix of a inuyasha song + UY,that one really showed some of da romance and drama scenes of lum and ataru
