Title: Hi, I'm Ataru Moroboshi. Number-One Japanese boy. Please Date me!
Post by: UataruY on July 15, 2008, 07:18:54 PM
ataru is simply the best! he is capable of doing anything to get a girl to date him, i think most of us guys would love to be like him don't you agree?
this is why i choose him as my favourite UY character.

P.S. i love lum too but ataru is simply hilarious! xD

Ataru may be a pervert as everyone call him but i think he likes a selfish child who wants everything but don't want to lose anything>.<
But sometimes he so romantic :)

Ataru  mai  be  curse  with  bad  luck,  and  is  a  pervert.  But  i  think  that  is  just  and  act.  BUt  still  he  is  one  of  the  funniest  ,and  grazys  character  in  UY  thats  why  he  is  my  favorate  character.

I just about fell out of my chair laughing when I heard Ataru speaking the lines of the title to this thread in English in that episode.  He didn't do too badly at speaking English!   ;D (Speaking of which, this emoticon looks a lot like his trademark grin, no?)

I'd have to say Ataru is my favorite too, especially since he really isn't such a bad guy underneath that perverted exterior.  And he's actually quite intelligent even though he comes off as a dim bulb.  Intelligent for all the wrong pursuits, of course, but still intelligent.

I wouldn't call Ataru intelligent... Shinobu is intelligent. Ataru is smart. Intelligence is about knowledge. Being smart is finding a solution to get away with something, for instance.

I actually would consider Ataru intelligent. He's clever, except when it comes to his lust, he learns and adapts quickly. To be perfectly honest, I agree that Ataru's lust and perversity is an act. I think he does know better, but he does it anyway because it bothers Lum. Even though he may deep down love her, he doesn't want to admit it, not to her, not to himself, and it's a tactic to drive a wedge between the two of them.

I think I've said before that Ataru is my favorite character, and part of that is because I understand things from his point of view. He reminds me of myself in many ways. Perhaps more ways than I'd be willing to admit...

I  like  atauru  because  he  is  the  most  conples  ,and  outgoing  characters  in  UY.
He  loves  Lum  yet  he  try's  to  get  away  from to  some  tipe  of  crazy  extreme.  It  seams  that  every  think  he  does  is  reject  some  thing  Lum,  shool,  the  rules  that  enyone  trys  to  impose  on  him.  That  makes  his  actions  funny  and  unpredible.  Thas  why  i  like  him.

I guess Ataru just likes to live each day as it was his last... and thats why he does what he does... he just enjoys life in his own way... and that is why (probably, just my opinion) he doesn't take his relation with Lum seriously... mostly because it involves marriage...

Thas  true.  I  would  too  if  i  had  a  group of  guys  trying  to  kill  me  at  any  given  moment.

Living in the moment and not having to worry about the future is a wonderful way to live.

That's how I live ^_^ but I have a different interpretation of "living the moment" as in I don't go to the extreme as Ataru does.

Not necessarily. Get a job you enjoy, or work for yourself. Play the game, but do it by your own rules.

That's how I live ^_^ but I have a different interpretation of "living the moment" as in I don't go to the extreme as Ataru does.

Isn't there some anime/manga law you can refer to about that?

hmm? about living the moment? I don't think so... why?
Title: Re: Hi, I'm Ataru Moroboshi. Number-One Japanese boy. Please Date me!

No, about going to extremes. Obviously someone wouldn't be able to get away with it in reality without being put in prison for a few years (or a few decades) and becoming a registered sex offender, but Ataru all but rapes random women on a day-to-day basis.

At least in the anime. In the manga, it he mostly sticks to his regular women, at least after he seems to start accepting Lum's love for him.

No, at this moment, I cannot think of an anime law to go with it

Well... I live everyday as the last day. That's why I don't study. I write in a piece of paper what I think it's essential for the exams and put it in my pocket. If I need some "help" I have these "memory helpers" to make me remind of what is the answer to some questions. It doesn't work as I want to but it's always better than to get a 1 out of 20 in every class but English (my lowest grade was 16 and my highest grade was 19) and GYM (I have 10 because I'm too lazy too play sports that aren't soccer, basketball, handball or badmington) xD

I guess these are why I would LOVE to be an anime character! I would never get stuck on a class even if I had 0 in every exams and written tests.

Anyways, Ataru was already a pervert before he met Lum. I think he just didn't know what love was before falling in love with her. When he fell in love with Lum, he didn't change "that" much because freedom is sacred. He doesn't want to be stuck to a person that young. He's only 17 for UY's sake! It's more or less like if you had to MARRY the first crush of your life. I understand him but I don't think I would the things that he did (to Lum and to other girls) even if I could.

Just because you use an uncommon means of studying, doesn't mean you're not studying in your own way, cata. ;)

I disagree that he was a pervert before Lum. What evidence is there? Yes, he was attracted to women, obviously, but a pervert? No. When Lum went back in time, he latched onto women, but what do you expect from a lonely and abused child whose parents don't love him? By the time his friendship with Shinobu evolved into a relationship he had calmed down. Yes, he still looked at other women, but what hormone-charged teenage boy doesn't? He didn't really start harassing women the way he did until Shinobu dropped him for her fixation on Mendo.

Also, 17 is a far cry from the "first crush of your life". I think I had my first crush around 10 years old. By the time I was 17, I was nearly a year into my relationship with who would later become my first ex-fiance. In Ataru's case, I think it has more to do with the fact that he feels boxed into a relationship that, not only is he not ready for, but he didn't want to begin with. He was in love with Shinobu when Lum forced herself into his life, and while he was physically attracted to Lum, he didn't like her at all. Try putting yourself in his shoes and imagine how he must have felt.

Ataru in love with Shinobu? I don't believe that. Anyways, I meant crush as first love. Sorry, my bad. Ataru still harassed girls when he was with Shinobu. In the first episodes where he rejected 100% Lum's presence, he "believed" that he was with Shinobu and he still harassed Sakura, for instance.

He grabbed Shinobu's butt, that's perverted.

He stole Lum's bra, that's... actually that's kinda desperate lol

Shinobu: "Don't you understand that your over-sexed nature... ... is the cause of all the problems?"

If doing the same thing that Ataru did (stealing someone's bra or whatever) was the only way of saving the Earth or something serious to me I'm sure I would do it. I mean... it was for a good reason. ;)

If Ataru wasn't in love Shinobu, do you really think he would have gotten so excited by the idea of marrying her? Or why he would have pursued her so diligently, ignoring many other girls, until he realized she had given up on him?

As far as the thing with Sakura, he met her when he was trying to run away from his life, EVERYTHING in his life, including Shinobu. Wouldn't you be mad, even if it's with someone you love, if she had "left you to the dogs" as it were because you have a stalker that you have no control over? I would.

Why are we arguing about this? Urusei Yatsura was underdeveloped at this point of time, we can't really take parts at the beginning too seriously.

How about... uhh... the topic? As in Ataru overall, not just the early parts of his story?

What, the early parts of his story aren't a part of his story? Just because you write them off because they don't fit with what you want them to be doesn't mean they don't count.

If you dislike his early story so much, why don't you rewrite the whole series then, huh?

At what point did I say "the first few episodes suck a**" huh?

seriously, wtf? All I meant was during the first chapters, Rumiko Takahashi probably didn't have a full development of his character planned. That being said, there's no way to be sure what kind of character he was at that time.

Try thinking realistically instead of misrepresenting my words.

XD c'mon, seriously though. My point is that Rumiko could have had a different vision in mind for Ataru.

Need I remind everyone that Lum was a character that wasn't originally intended to stay in the series? (surprising as it may be) I believe she was kept by popular demand. If Rumiko changed that aspect, imagine what she may have changed with Ataru?

Ever since I read that Lum wasn't meant to stay for too long that I've been wondering what her original idea was. I wish I could ask Rumiko. :P

I think her original idea was to just tell the story of the unluckiest boy in the world. At least that's the impression I get from the first few chapters of the manga. I think her originally intended cast of characters was Ataru, Shinobu and Cherry. I don't think she expected it to be as popular as it did, when I compare it to some of her other works of the time. I also think that the only reason it became so popular was because of Lum.

But yeah, those are just my impressions.

I think her original idea was to just tell the story of the unluckiest boy in the world.

If that is true, then it would be logical that no indications (or at least no great amounts) of pervertedness existed at the beginning, which is what I was trying to say before.
