Title: I Dream of Lum Too
Post by: Lumbeat on June 21, 2007, 08:14:52 AM
So I was watching this TV station that was showing some of these old 60's TV shows, and the one I happened to catch on this particular evening was I Dream of Jeannie - a 1965 TV situation comedy.

Looking at the show I was delighted and surprised at how similar the personality of Jeannie is to Lum!  Jeannie is played with sparkling charm and delight by actress Barbara Eden.  You could almost expect to hear Jeannie call her master (Col. Nelson) 'daahlinng' and see her as Lum.  :Y

Of course, it has been mentioned in an Animerica issue that the 1965 TV show may have been a favorite of a very young Rumiko Takahashi when the show was on Japanese television.  Whether that's actually true or not, I don't know.  But Jeannie and her personality certainly could fill in for Lum almost completely and hardly anyone in the Moroboshi family would probably notice (except for maybe a lusting Ataru).

There's a bit of green missing...
But I guess pics don't show personalities.

Can she fly too? :P

I loved that show, I used to watch it everyday. She was the hotest thing on daytime telly at the time. Oh how i hated Nelson for not appreciating her and generally being a idiot >:D

Considering the number of tributes in UY, I imagine it was based on her just like the starwars and (I flicked frame by frame through the sequence to make sure I was correct) Robotech snipets  B)
I cannot remember any other obvious ones, but im sure there are plenty more.

To answer Kroptik, I dont remember her flying but she did 'blink' and teleport, she can even time travel. She didnt really have much need to actually go anywhere the old fasion way  :D

When she goes into her Genie bottle she does travel in and out of it as smoke.  She also does levitate occasionally too.  I guess the only reason we haven't seen her flying was because the show was low-budget after all.  But it was popular enough to stay on the air for 5 years.

I guess teleport envolves flying... like if a person teleports its like she is flying at a supersonic speed without no one noticing...

Of course if she teleports she doesn't need to fly, but I was just amused at the idea that it was easily due to the style, times, editing and budget.  In TV today (or at least maybe in the movies today) she'd probably be flying among skyscrapers dealing a deadly blow against super-villains in a 100 million CGI matrix-type movie.

And that would probably be just the sequel. ;D

I love that one with the bazooka.:Y

But I could use the top one. Too bad it's cropped (she's too far over to the right).  I would love to use something like that one.  I'm going to download it and see what I can make of it.

*Edit* My mistake. It looked cropped because of my display setting.  The image looks fine. ^O^

Later and thanks!

I can definitely see the influence that I Dream of Jeannie may have had on Rumiko Takahashi. Lum makes one very sexy genie! :D)

Great timing, Necron 99.

I believe Lum also wears a similar Genie outfit in other episodes that I recall seeing that at least shows an I Dream of Jeannie influence on the costume.  But seeing an actual I Dream of Jeannie episode really surprised me how closely aligned in situation and bright personality the Jeannie character is to Lum.  That completely delighted me.

I've never seen the ending.  But then I've also never seen the last Lum TV episode.

I've never seen the ending too, but I remember there was a movie...it was several years after the episodes and I saw only the final part, where she was forced to leave him by a powerful genius, and his memories about her (and their son) were erased...but in the ending she wasn't going to surrender and decided to try again to conquer him!

There are a lot of points similar to "Boy meets Girl", aren't there? ;D
