Title: How Much do Manga-ka make?
Post by: Kroptik on May 16, 2010, 02:14:17 AM
With all the things about online illegal scans/translations and all that, you'd expect manga-ka to be on a low budget. Well, it's not really like that at all. :O

Here's a list from Comic Fan volume 16 with the 17 highest paid Manga creators in Japan:

Quote
Tax amount (estimated income in parenthesis) in millions of yen

Takahashi Rumiko 225.36 (616)
Aoyama Takemasa 162.34 (446)

Akimoto Osamu 50.03 (142)
Akatsuka Fujio 47.67 (136)

In 2002 Manga information magazine Comic Fan published a list of the top tax payers among Manga-ka at the time and their estimated annual income. Rumiko Takahashi was then, as she is now, the highest taxed Manga-ka in Japan, with an estimated income of 616 million yen in 2001. In 2003 Takahashi paid 171 million yen in taxes, down from the 225 million she paid in 2001. It can be estimated that she earned approximately 450 million yen in 2003.

Try to be a manga-ka in Portugal and then try to be one in Japan... Same job, big difference.

I read somewhere that Takahashi-san is one of the 5 richest women in Japan. I read somewhere else that she is one of the 3 richest. And, I read still somewhere else that she IS The Richest Woman In Japan.

If she IS the richest, then all 3 statements are technically correct :D

I comfirm this...
I read somewhere that Takahashi-san is one of the 5 richest women in Japan. I read somewhere else that she is one of the 3 richest. And, I read still somewhere else that she IS The Richest Woman In Japan.

The top ten tax payers in the Entertainment Industry are

1. Soshitsu Sen, the Japanese tea manner master (-)
2. Keita Asari, stage drama director (6)
3. Rumiko Takahashi, Manga-ka (8 )
4. Genshitsu Sen, Japanese tea manner master (5)
5. Takemasa Aoyama, Manga-ka (-)
6. Tsunku, Music composer and producer (7)
7. Kimimaro Ayanokoji (-)
8. Yasushi Akimoto, Lyric writer (9)
9. Takeshi Konomi , Manga-ka (10)
10. Joe Hisaishi (-)

The number in brackets is their position in this category last year.

This referring to 2003/2004... but...The higher someone's income tax, the higher their actual presumed earnings, however it is possible for a person to have paid more taxes than another person who made more money.

Wow. Ms Takahashi: over 5370000 euro per year (it means 447500 euro per mounth).

It means that I have to work for at least 31 months ("Christmas bonuses" included: keep in mind that in Italy is entitled to 13 months salary per year) to earn what she owns in about 30 days.

Question: these people have a bit of time to enjoy all this money?

Probably not a whole lot XD That might be why Ms. Takahashi was on hiatus recently.

Answer: NO! Just using Ms. Takahashi as an example: she has to have a new chapter (16-to-24 pages of story and art) completed and turned in on-time every week for 50 weeks out of the year (publishing of Weekly Shonen Sunday takes a break for each of the national holidays of "GoldenWeek" and NewYear's).

I suppose that, theoretically, a manga-ka could employ a few more staffers and delegate more of the work to them, allowing the manga-ka more time to play ... but that would mean more money spent on those staffers and thus less money for the manga-ka to play with....
