Hello Folks,
I like this Lum character but haven't seen any of the films
I have only budget for one DVD, so my simple question is: which is the best film?(simple to ask, difficult to answer probably)
Urusei Yatsura: Movie 1 - Only You
Urusei Yatsura: Movie 2 - Beautiful Dreamer
Urusei Yatsura: Movie 3 - Remember My Love
Urusei Yatsura: Movie 4 - Lum The Forever
Urusei Yatsura: Movie 5 - The Final Chapter
[Admin Edit]
I've created a poll for you to have it a bit easier
[/Admin Edit]
-
in my opinion the movie 2-beautiful dreamer and the movie 5 are the best :D
-
The first and third are the best. The way Only You is drawn slightly annoying, especially the close-ups of some of the characters, but overall I think it's the best UY film. Remember My Love is the best drawn of all of them, and is almost as good as the first one. The last 3 minutes of the film is my all-time favourite moment in movie history.
For my part, I've never understood all the ravings about Beautiful Dreamer. It has few great scenes (especially the ending is great), but as a whole, it's not much of a movie. The basic concept of it has been done a million times since, in all kinds of movies, and much like the fourth movie, it gets too caught up in trying to tell a serious story and as a whole the movie just didn't do anything for me.
The Final Chapter is absolutely amazing, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen most of the series and isn't familiar with all the main characters.
-
I chosed Only You because the storie goes way before Ataru and Lum relation and like Sakura we found out that "...in all Universe there is someone whit the same bad taste for manhas Lum..." or something like that :P
-
I chose Beautiful Dreamer, because it contains humoristic elements (as first UY episodes) and introspective elements (as later UY eps).
And more, it's a great movie made by a great director.
-
I would start by watching the series but Beautiful Dreamer can caught anyone's attention.
-
I would raccomend Only You to someone new to UY. Movies 2, 3, 4 require a deeper knowledge of the series/characters to be fully appreciated, and movie 5 is the ending :&

:- :Y ;)

Remember My Love (M3) is the most cosmetically appealing of them all. That's why it gets my vote =3
I really hated M5 because of how they drew the characters. It really spoiled an otherwise excellent film.
But seriously now, just get the manga off BoxTorrents. Then you don't need to worry about the plot of the movies, or long/expansive downloads.
If you aren't hooked on Lum after having seen M3, then what are you? O.o;;
-
Muffin Land, is that in Japan??? LoL
-
I would have to recommend Only You
This movie provides the best example of Lum and Ataru's relationship, although i do believe that in the movie Rei should have been fighting Ataru every step of the way (just like in the series), this would have made it funnier and a better example of the life of UY
-
I would have to agree that the best way is to start from the beginning. Its no fun to watch a movie and have no idea whats going on!
-
Although Beautiful Dreamer is my favorite of the UY movies, I would recommend Only You to those who are new to UY because, like Forgotten said, it provides the best example of Lum and Ataru's relationship. The scene where Lum tries to save Ataru while piloting an unstable ship is so touching. :)
-
Movie 1 Only One is the best movie for those who doesn't have a good knowledge about the anime. I recommend the new fans to watch the episodes first, then the Ova's and finnaly the movies.
-
Why not movie 6??
It isn't even here...
-
Done my voting
-
For someone new to the UY experience, I would recommend, and voted for, the first film, Only You. Yes, the others are all excellent films and worthy of viewing, but can come across as formidable and at times confusing to someone as yet unfamiliar to the wacky world of Lum and friends. The first film does a nice job of balancing out all the various elements of UY that makes this series SO appealing and thus is the most accessible of the five ( or six, depending on one's POV ).
Just my opinion.
-
I had to learn this the hard way.
My first experience with UY was Movie 2 (Beautiful Dreamer). I fell right in. I got it. "Tadaima!!"
So, when friends who were kind enough to humor my obsession (partly to shut me up, I'm sure) asked which one to see, I recommended Movie #2. They rented and viewed. Their reaction was ... lukewarm. :'(
They then (on their own) rented Movie 1, and after watching, proclaimed it to be much better for UY-neophytes.
I still think Movie 2 is the best of the first 5 (haven't seen 6 yet -- maybe soon). But, Movie 1 (Only You) is the best choice for a first-time viewer.
-
I would choose beautiful dreamer because it has the best story, best sound track and has more of an oddity factor when compared to the other movies.
-
But for first time viewers of the whole series, it's better Movie 1 because if they decide to watch the Anime, they already have an idea of what the story is and they won't get disappointed because they already were expecting something like UY.
Movie 2 doesn't show much of what's going on between Lum and Ataru which is what UY is all about, except weird people and weird situations.
Movie 2 is very different from the TV series.
That's why I think Movie 1 is the best to introduce UY to new people.
-
I wouldn't show movie 1 to anyone but children because the sequence at the start with the alien delivering invitations on a bike looks like its for kids.
-
What the hell?!?!?!
So I can't watch Movie 1 because there's an alien delivering invitations on a bike which means it's childish?
What Planet are you from again?
-
and u cant say its childish cause of that one scene... and u said u wouldn't show it to ANYONE BUT children? that's just screwed up.
-
So I can't watch Movie 1 because there's an alien delivering invitations on a bike which means it's childish?
Just go back and watch the first bit of the movie and pretend you have never seen UY before, you would lose interest or sneer at it because you would think its for kids. Try this out on people who don't know about it and they won't want to watch the rest of it.
When I first saw movie 1 I thought the plot was a bit weak and that it was slow.
-
I can't believe what I reading. Are you even serious?!?!?! So, if the first scene doesn't appeal you, you're not going to even give a second chance to the movie? That's just insane!
For your information the kind plot of Movie 1 is the same kind as Kurama's storyline and love triangles are one of the most plots that UY has. If you like UY so much as you say so, then I don't believe you don't like the movie.
-
Give it a second chance? HOW ABOUT GIVING IT A FIRST CHANCE??????
Here's something u need to know about anime: If the main characters are teenagers, it's for TEENAGERS.
Seeing Mendou alone proves that the main characters are in the teenage state, so if ur gonna go by first impressions, make sure u interpret it CORRECTLY.
-
Heck! Kurama's storyline, Lum's storyline and Elle's storyline are the SAME. If you don't like Elle's storyline, HOW can you LIKE Lum's storyline, which means, HOW can you LIKE UY?!?!
Btw, Elle is the alien Princess that kidnaps Ataru to marry her in Movie 1.
-
I just didn´t think movie 1 made much of an impact to me. There are no memorable moments in it. Unfortunatly most of the UY movies aren´t very good. I liked movie 2, and I liked movie 4 (the 2nd best film for me) but it should at least have had a proper plot. Movie 3 had a good beginning up to when she follows the magician through the city (good music at that bit) but then the rest of it I don´t care what happens and the characters are poor.

Oh... my... Lum!
So you say "there are no memorable moments in it"? Okay... Let's see ONLY a few because THERE'S TOO MANY OF THEM (potential spoilers) :

SPOILERS:
And that WHOLE scene where Ataru is about to get married to Elle and Lum just bursts through the window and Ataru runs like mad with a heavy ball attached to his foot and they hug each other. Lum's crying and Ataru even kissed her on the cheek!.
And that scene where Lum's holding Ten and they're both sleeping, Ataru appologizes to her and goes to kiss her on her forehead. She woke up and they both laugh about it, he covers her up and soon as he's about to kiss her, the spaceship where they are, suddenly stops and Ataru falls down.
HOW CAN THAT NOT BE MEMORABLE?!?!?!
HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT MOST UY MOVIES AREN'T GOOD?!?!?! They have EVERYTHING UY has!!!!
Everyone has different opinions which should be respected but you... you just contradict what you say. You say you like UY but with those statements all you're doing is showing us that you don't like UY's plot and characters.
UY's characters aren't poor. I'll tell you what's poor: YOU ARE!
-
the characters are poor
When referring to the third film I meant that the characters that appear exclusively in that film are poor.Namely Ruu & Lahla.
I really don't think that the plots in the movies are that good. I do however very much enjoy the plots in the TV series and the manga.
-
Almost every movie has a scene where Ataru somehow expresses his feelings for Lum and I think that's one of the things that makes UY movies special.
-
I would recommend to watch the first movie, but the first things the episodes
-
I recommended UY to a friend of mine and she said she liked it but dropped it. -.-
I told her to watch the first episodes. Aw well... Nobody's perfect. xD

That' probably would of happened to me to if I watched ANY movie first. I started on episode 1, and just got addicted to it from there on.
The problem with watching the movies first is, to a new viewer, there are all of these random characters everywhere, and they have no idea who there are. The TV show actually introduced them into the franchise properly. So I can see why the movies would be kinda "different" to a none-UY fan.
-
Might suggest reading the character profiles and story synopses on this and other UY fansites. Helped hook me.

That's obvious since the Movies are longer episodes but with its storyline more developed. In order to understand the movie, one would have to watch a few episodes first.
Also, I didn't show her ANY movie, I showed her the EPISODES!!!
-

Ya I know that. I was talking about the topic in general, sorry 'bout the confusion. =P
-
Oh I see. I thought you were... Nevermind lol! xD
So anyways I think we would all agree that showing the episodes is the best way to make someone crazy for UY.
-
yes gender I agree
-
Do I need to say it?
(Yes, I agree)
-
yes gender I agree
Am I the only one who doesn't know what "gender" was referred to here?
-
No you're not. :P
I agree too...and I think it applies to all animes. xD
-
How come when someone misunderstands my comment, there is an uproar but when I correct them, no one reacts?
-
Corrected where? :S
-
What are you talking about? You explained, I discussed, you re-explained and I think that was the end of the conversation. There's no need to react to something just because it happened. We could and should react to something if it's somehow important or interesting enough to react to it.
-
I thought that was the point of a forum.
-
Spamming or discussion things that are worth to be discussing about? What the heck do you want me to say about your reaction? Oo
-
movie 1 becuz it the first movie
-
Honestly if someone is new to UY then they really should watch the series for a while before watching any of the movies.
But if you have to start with a movie then "Only You" is the one to watch.
Most UY movies are not much like the series at all. They try too hard to be serious and there isn't much that is serious about UY to begin with.
The Movies are great for fans of the series and even with that they can sometimes be difficult to understand.
-
thats ture. start with the first episode, it tells everyone whats going on..
ps. does anyone know the episode where lum and ataru go on a pickinc?
i cant find it or is it a ova?
-
IMO i wouldn't really rec any UY movie ,because one could enjoy a whole lot more if they watched(or read) the series 1st. But if i have to pick a movie i would go with the 6th one always my darling ,because its not really a major movie :X
-
ur right foxhead556 people should start with the movies first, becuz it just confusing, they will understan that ataru is getting married but they wont know why lum is trying to stop him from getting married to elle(i think that her name, havent watch it in a while).. to me they should start with the first episode becuz it tells them whats going on. it better and then they can watch the movie.8)
-
I have to agree with many of the others on here that I wouldn't show any UY movie to someone unfamiliar with the series. I let the people I've introduced the series get thru the introduction of the main characters before I hit em with the movies.
Only You is still my all-time favorite animated film, with Remember My Love (#3) a close second. I have some serious plans for Ruu's return to 1980's Tomobiki in my Final Urusei Yatsura Season scripts. Of course when he does return, he's aged several years, and has already met someone who's replaced his earlier feelings for Lum.
-
Just to get the right idea, i would suggest movie one.
-
The only movie I've watched is the trailer for Only You, and the first few minutes (in badly dubbed English), and I'm already scared to watch the movies now. Especially that part where Lum turns into the Savage She-Hulk!
-
if possible, watch Urusei Yatsura in Japanse dub with English subs. The experience will be so much better, imho.

The question is if it IS possible. I've tried finding Only You online somewhere in Japanese with English subtitles, but have had no luck so far. I have watched so many of the TV episodes in Japanese with English subtitles that I don't think I can stand to watch UY English-dubbed. Partly because of what little I've seen, they just seem like bad dubbing jobs to me, but probably mostly because now I can't imagine anyone else but Fumi Hirano voiceing the character of Lum. I love the sound of her voice!
-
I would recommend movie 3 because it is the most beautiful for me, it also has a story that makes me cry every time I see it ... it seems that I have come a little late to this page :'( :'(
-
You're fine, Jhordan. With the exception of our Fearless Leader, Lum-chan, we're ALL a little late to this series (almost 40 years since it debuted on TV). I myself stumbled onto it (and this forum) in 2007.
-
It seems incredible to me how this page has survived, I have been looking at all the corners and it has been quite a few years, I am glad to know that I am not the only one obsessed with Lum, :) I hope you are having a good time

I too have wondered that. Almost all of the forums I went in the 2000's and 2010's are now closed or without any activity at all and many of them had more people registered than lum-chan. What I'm saying is that is a small wonder that this forum has endured almost three decades, thanks Lum-chan for that. It gives me such a nice feeling to come here once in a while to check and see everything in place. It's quieter now than when the majority of us registered, yes... but I guess it's normal with the age of the anime and the internet now being more about social media, for the good or the bad, forums are things of the past for many people.
I voted on movie 1 because it's basically a big episode of the tv series and has not all the characters in it. But if possible I would vote on watching the tv series first. It makes no sense anyone new to the universe of Lum grabbing one of the movies to watch because they would miss character introductions and developement. I guess that after you see all the characters introduced, you can watch all the movies without worries.
-
Back in the day I voted Beautiful Dreamer and it still his my favorite movie if not the best movie of all 6.
I like the philosophical theme and the Inception vibes of the movie and the art and soundtrack is great.
I still don't know why Takahashi disliked the movie.
That's why I also like Lum the 4ever, Final Chapter is a solid 2nd place for me but Lum the 4ever is at 3rd.
Despite is confusion it has deeper meaning and philosophical theme, I consider the artwork on this movie the best and that soundtrack at the really gives u melancholy.
Also it's easy to find the movies subbed, I downloaded all 6 movies in blu-ray recently with subs incorporated.
