JUST saw this on AnimeNewsNetwork; copy-and-paste'd here verbatim:
"The North American distributor AnimEigo announced on its website on Wednesday that it has been unable to renew its North American license to Urusei Yatsura, a television anime and animated film franchise based on Rumiko Takahashi's manga of the same name. The company will cease accepting orders for the franchise starting on September 30, but predicts that it will run out of stock prior to that date."
So, any speculation on who might pick up the franchise?
-
Man. :( Second half of UY ordered. I know better than wait! I'll probably be stuck with 3/8 box sets on Maison Ikkoku for so long...
-
This is horrible...Now how will i finish my collection!!! WOW...When it rains it pours i guess.
:-[
-
The problem is, im not in the USA and AnimEigo ships only in the USA and Canada. In other stores the dvds are too expensive.
-
I can only imagine that VIZ will pick up the license, but whether they will publish the DVD's has yet to be seen.
-
tv box 10 is now sold out.
-
So... UY mainly distributed from animeigo only right?? No other company does it? So all the places online that you order from like amazon and what not they wouldnt be able to get it anymore either?? Im just making sure i understand it all...
This sucks..
:???
-
Dam this sucks even though i never bought a UY DVD it pains me knowing that they couldn't renew a awesome anime.
-
I think AnimEigo lacks the resources to renew their license, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that VIZ is pressing quietly from within to bring UruseiYatsura into their stable of Takahashi works (already possessing Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha and the new one).

The are other places, but the problem, they are too expensive and i haven't a credit card. RightStuf have the same prices and ships international, but they accept only credit cards.
Would be nice, if an american user can help me (i can pay with paypal). One of my friends need the tv volumes 41 - 50.

Heads-Up: Urusei Yatsura shortage worsens!
As mentioned in a previous news item, Urusei Yatsura is going out-of-print on the 30th of September, 2011.
As individual titles in the series run out, they will not be re-pressed, and some of them are already out of print! Our stocks of the remaining DVDs are getting quite low.
So if you've always been meaning to complete your collection of UY, now is the time. Buy now or cry later!
Tip: if you want to order a lot of DVDs, our Complete Product List lets you add as many DVDs as you want to your shopping cart in a single operation!

so some dvds are already out of print.
-
Damn, gonna be hard for me to get this series on DVD if someone else doesn't pick it up.
-
and some sell only the vol. 50 for over 45$ or higher...
What a luck that i have this volume already :)
-
Only 1 month, before Urusei Yatsura get out-of-print!
Here is a list, what is available on Animeigo: http://animeigo.com/products/anime/urusei-yatsura
-
I'm hoping to find a Japanese dvd set of Urusei Yatsura so that I don't have to worry about this if I want to get Urusei Yatsura on DVD.
-
The Japanese dvd boxset is really expensive: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Urusei-Yatsura-TV-Series-Japanese-DVD-BOX-Complete-Set-/280728803551
or look at Yahoo Auctions!
http://page14.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/s240742281
http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n97780319 (but without the 10th anniversary special)
http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m86847060 (include all movies + ova + It's a Rumic World OVA)
If you buy that, let me know if you get the 10th anniversary special, because i missing the second part ^^.
-
Ooooo, thanks for the links! xD
And I kinda assumed it would be expensive as DVDs are super expensive in Japan.
That second yahoo auction link is very reasonable but it has a bid and ends in 2 days >.<
I wanna be all settled into my room before I bid on anything.
I'll probably never end up getting anything from ebay, but I'll definitely keep checking yahoo auctions Japan.
I'm hoping to be able to get it all for under 100,000 yen.
My plan will be to hopefully be able to find used UY DVDs at a Book-Off and get the whole series that way if I can because that would be really cheap. xP
But if there's another good yahoo auctions deal I'll go with that.

I suppose you already know about region locking and that most US DVD players will not play anything other than Region 1. Japan is a different Region. Some DVD players (cheap chinese ones not available in the US) will play any region.
-
Yup, I'm well aware of the region difference. My computer is actually set to play Japan region DVDs and I have purchased Japan DVDs before and they have played flawlessly. Thanks for the warning though xD
-
What a luck that all my dvd players and dvd drives are region code free :)
Japan and Europe have the same DVD regional code ^^.

When I lived overseas everything was region free and all you could buy was bootlegs and they were very cheap.
Same quality as the originals.
-
not right, the quality of bootlegs are very different. Most of them put 7-9 episodes on a DVD5 (4,7 GB)!!!
The best quality have japanese dvds (mostly, but not always) and all movies was rereleased with a new master on dvd.
I recommend the second movie on japanese dvd, they have the best sound (5.1).

Well since that is all that is available over there as you really can't buy movies in the stores. I saw them and the DVD quaility was as good as the originals. Yes they do put more episodes on a disc but the fact is that a DVD with 4 episodes doesn't take up much room on the disc. Everyone had bootleg over there. Believe me the quality was on par with any commercial release.
Of course I gave away all of those when I moved back to the US.
So maybe bootlegs you have gotten were subpar but I assure you the ones they had over there were great. and cheap at $1-$1.50 a disc.

It's too bad :( I only have volumes 1 and 2, and Movie 2 (which isn't even from AnimEigo).
-
For those who care. I managed to recover the complete Urusei Yatsura Image-Gallery. I'll put it on my USB-stick and if everything is going OK, I'll put them online this evening ;)
-
^ I bow before such greatness.
-
Thanks Lum-chan :). What a luck, that i made a backup one week before AnimEigo shut down their UY gallery page.
-
You're welcome AtaruLumFan. Currently, I'm uploading the complete gallery which contains 532 images as they were found on AnimEigo. This could take a while as I'm only can use 1 mbps of my pipe for uploading...
The gallery can be found at AnimEigo UY Gallery (http://www.lum-chan.com/index.php?page=372)
Sorry about the used color-scheme, I didn't have time to select a better fit to the current site-design, but that will be fixed soon together with all the other galleries
Edit:
Upload is done! Enjoy!
