Title: Significance of "I love you" hand gesture in UY?
Post by: Koroshiya Megane 13 on July 15, 2007, 04:30:28 AM
Why do some UY characters make the "I love you" hand gesture when they get hit / attacked / bonked with a mallet?

This is where the tips of the middle and ring fingers touch the palm while the rest of the fingers and thumb point straight out. I notice these hand gestures occur everywhere in the manga, but only show up once in a while in the anime.

What is the significance of this hand gesture in the UY context? It can't be "I love you" because that wouldn't make sense when they've just been attacked.  ;D ???

Could be a hint regarding that da anime is a romance comedy, anyways most of Takahashi works use that gesture when characters are struck

Very interesting. I hadn't considered that. As far as Takahashi's works are concerned, I am familiar only with UY. I'm kind of like Megane in that sense (and others... ;D). He sees only Lum-san; I see only UY. :)

The corna (i.e., headbanger/metal/rock/devil) hand gesture is similar, but slightly different. Instead of the thumb extended out, it touches the middle and ring fingers. }) >:D >:)

No, that's just the devil/horns one. The rock sign is with the thumb sticking out...

It's not very hard to see it just need a good eye but sometimes it only takes a secund and we don't see it. I was seeing the episodes right now and only at the episodes 155 to 160 I just found 20 hand gestures. I only put 8 here.

Well you should try watching the original (Japanese) and then watching the English version... it works for me... I always noticed that hand gesture... and its not just in UY... there's Ranma 1/2 and several other animes...
