Why do some UY characters make the "I love you" hand gesture when they get hit / attacked / bonked with a mallet?
This is where the tips of the middle and ring fingers touch the palm while the rest of the fingers and thumb point straight out. I notice these hand gestures occur everywhere in the manga, but only show up once in a while in the anime.
What is the significance of this hand gesture in the UY context? It can't be "I love you" because that wouldn't make sense when they've just been attacked. ;D ???

Could be a hint regarding that da anime is a romance comedy, anyways most of Takahashi works use that gesture when characters are struck

Very interesting. I hadn't considered that. As far as Takahashi's works are concerned, I am familiar only with UY. I'm kind of like Megane in that sense (and others... ;D). He sees only Lum-san; I see only UY. :)

indeed

I always thought that was a rock related sign? ??? ???
Am I missing something here or have I been wrong all these years? :?
-
Well,it could be a rocker sign or the love sign, depends how ya look at it
-
The corna (i.e., headbanger/metal/rock/devil) hand gesture is similar, but slightly different. Instead of the thumb extended out, it touches the middle and ring fingers. }) >:D >:)
-
No, that's just the devil/horns one. The rock sign is with the thumb sticking out...
-
Indeed, this sign is very commun in UY. In almost every episodes someone do that Ataru do the sign every time and Lum sometimes just see.

How come I never noticed that?? O_O
-
Good question.

It's not very hard to see it just need a good eye but sometimes it only takes a secund and we don't see it. I was seeing the episodes right now and only at the episodes 155 to 160 I just found 20 hand gestures. I only put 8 here.

Im normally struggling to read the subs while watching the general action taking place, you lot sure have good eyesight :)
-
It's not that difficult.
-
Yeah, subtitles are my problem too, since I can't look at those details...
-
Well you should try watching the original (Japanese) and then watching the English version... it works for me... I always noticed that hand gesture... and its not just in UY... there's Ranma 1/2 and several other animes...
-
True. I can read the subtitles and play atention to the details in the Anime with no problem at all.
-
me too
-
I guess most of us can put attention on both subtitles and da cultural details
-
Well... cultural details??? LoL
I noticed them... but I didn't know what it was... LoL... but now I know...

Besides most of Rumiko animes, which other animes use the "love/rock" gesture when a character is hit?
-
Well... When getting hit... I will have to search... but I know for sure that in the Sailor Moon anime... they did that alot at the final pose after transforming... at last the blond one with the long hair...
