Diamond to Stop Distributing 1,018 Viz Volumes
Diamond Comic Distributors have announced that they will no longer re-stock over 1,000 Viz volumes. Takahashi titles affected by this include: the six volumes of The Return of Lum, all of Maison Ikkoku, half of Mermaid Saga, and all of the Inuyasha Ani-manga. If you want these books, seriously consider getting them now

Thanks for the warning, Oni.
On a similar note, I read somewhere that Toho has changed its mind about making UruseiYatsura2:BeautifulDreamer available on Blu-ray. (I know this probably belongs in the UY on Blu-ray thread but I'm putting it here anyway. ::) ....)
-
Eh. I don't like VIZ much in the first place. I'd rather buy the mangas in Japanese anyway.
-
do you understand japanese?
-
Well... the only book I don't have from the Return of Lum series is Return of Lum: Creature Features... and by the looks of it I'm not going to get it... because its still out of stock... and I'm on the waiting list since 2004 XD

Hmm... thanks alot... I only looked at Amazon.co.uk now I have to figure out what else I'm going to buy... because the shiping cost is almost the same as the book... XD

do you understand japanese?
Spoken Japanese, I'd say I'm probably at a conversational level, but I'm currently illiterate. But what better way to learn how to read Japanese than by reading your favorite mangas?
-
I'm the exact opposite. I can probably read Japanese fine (provided I know the vocabulary)
but I'm pretty slow when speaking it.
-
Hmm... I can just understand spoken japanese... I know lots of vocabulary... but it depends... If they speak to fast I cant understand anything... still I understand 10 languages... I can only speak, read and writte 5 of them...
Besides its one of my work requierments... XD
-
Most people learn languages first by sight (reading and writing), then by sound (speaking and understanding). But personally, I think that's backwards. That's also the main reason people who learn foreign languages always have such horrible accents. Because they learn the vocabulary by looking at the words spelled out in Roman letters, and they apply their own languages pronunciation to those letters.
If you start by sound, however, it becomes more natural, and it's easier to avoid picking up an accent (unless the person you're learning from has an accent) because you're mimicking sounds instead of trying to read words you can't pronounce. That's also the way most people learn their first languages when they're children. Considering I plan to be living in Japan within the next 5 years, I think learning this way is much better.
-
hmm... I think Japanese has a small exception to that. In my class, we learned the a few written words before sound words but once we started getting into writing the Hiragana, we were taught the sound of each character. So although, most of the time, the class is writing Japanese, pretty much all of us know the pronunciation.
I like that each character only has ONE pronunciation, unlike English where words like "bear" and "bare" sound the same. Makes it a lot easier to pronounce written words you haven't learned yet.
I also found a site for pronouncing: http://www.languageguide.org/nihongo/
and the individual hiragana sounds are here: http://www.languageguide.org/im/alpha/jp/hiragana.jsp
-
Well, to each their own. Personally, if you can't understand what people are saying to you in the first place, there's no point to learning a language. Sure being able to read a foreign language is a pretty spiffy skill, but what practical use is there of only being able to do that?
Anyway, yes, English does have problems like those. But Japanese isn't without problems. I can think of a ton of things that are said the same way, but mean different things and are written differently (thanks to kanji), just like with the bear/bare example (or the even more classic to/too/two).
-
We DO learn and speak Japanese in the class. I just meant that my strength was in writing it.

Ya im the same

Back to the original thread (and this is a small storm that blew over a while back, but): turns out VIZ is doing their own distribution. That's quite an undertaking, BUT from what I hear Diamond is a real mess to deal with so I guess VIZ got FED UP.
-
It seams that mangafox and manga volume have removed the urusei yatsura from there web site because of lisesing is probable that onemanga.com and youtube may also removed it in the future.
Ps. I think that because of the new ova they espect a sudent rice of public interest so that they are reenforsing lisencing of the series.
-
Well, there's always torrents XD

I really hope that theory is true.
-
I'd liike that too, but i don't think that italian TVs will get a license for UY ;(. They'll mark it as "not educative" or something like that, even if they publicize and broadcast lots and lots of reality shows :r.
-
Talking about UY back in TV, did you read the thread named "AAAAAAARGH (http://www.lum-chan.com/index.php?topic=1105.0) ?!? >:(

Wow. I'm amazed they called UY "porn". I haven't even finished watching Ranma 1/2 episodes yet, and I've already seen 10X more nudity than all of the Urusei Yatsura episodes, movies and OVA's combined! (Haven't read much of the manga yet =/)
-
Yeah, Ranma has lots of partial nudity.
-
yes, i did. and i think that they are mental to mark UY as porn.
-
I don't think they're mental. They're either easy to please or totally close-minded.
-
no, they are mental, because they allow our TVs to broadcast some low-level tv programs that can't even be compared with UY, and they say that these programes are great, etc etc. so they are mental (or worse, but i don't want to say that on this forum ;) )

It's like that everywhere dude. Even here in Canada, there are so many random cartoons and anime fads being spewed out, and all of them make me cringe when I watch them.
-
We got screwed in Canada, there's barely any anime left showing on TV, unless you can get the Cartoon Network or Adult Swim channels somehow.
-
A few days ago I was zapping and stopped by ANIMAX which is an Anime-only tv channel. Guess what? It WAS an ANIME-ONLY channel. It was airing this non-animated series. Also, some of the Anime airing... is... just bad.
Anyways, I don't really watch ANIMAX since I have Internet.
