Title: Make your PC moe
Post by: janus on July 27, 2010, 12:12:52 PM
I remember back when I first started using computers back in 199x *cough cough* one of the first computers I got to use had the Simpson's' theme, wallpaper, cursors, sounds, Icons and probably the screen saver were all Simpson related. It was something really cool for me back in the day the only problem was that the theme was hard to find and a pain to install. But now that Windows 7 is here installing themes are just a few clicks away :7

I made this topic because I love sharing things that I find sharing it with you guys, although mostly are videos.
currently I'm not watching Black rock shooter because of this, so you better appreciate :'(

windows has had its unofficial OS-tans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS-tan) from windows 98 to vista in Japan
But since windows 7 came along it had it's first official mascot or OS-tan (in Japan at least) and her name is Madobe Nanami.
As part of a promotion, customers that preordered Windows 7 got a Madobe nanami theme who is voiced by Nana Mizuki, which name is coincidentally related to windows 7.
There is even a commercial where Madobe Nanami is featured

The internet spreads faster than a wildfire so we can all have the theme
Madobe Nanami theme with English fix and wav fix here (http://www.mediafire.com/?tqkdt1iyizj)
For xp users here (http://www.filestube.com/05b17b693a74165403ea,g/Madobe-Nanami-Theme-for-XP.html)

Later the search engine Bing from Microsoft Japan had a campaign which introduced 5 new characters for windows 7. Each has two themes that makes the total of 10 themes. The campaign ran from mid December of 2009 to mid January of 2010, so you can't get it first hand.
here are the first five NanaA (http://www.mediafire.com/?dzywmznj15e)
and the second NanaB (http://www.mediafire.com/?hmzejmxnm1z)
why all the characters named nana? I'm not very sure but it definitely has to do with the name Windows 7

here is a quick description of the characters according to NotCliche (http://www.notcliche.com/lbw/madobe-nanamis-successors-microsoft-bing-tans)
Quote
    * Nanae — Blue-suit female, sounds mature.
    * Nana — Your daily loli-fix, if you will.  Sounds energetic .
    * Nanako — Childhood friend. Sounds like your typical high-school girl.
    * Nanami — An twin-tailed android for Microsoft Bing? Sounds extremely energetic too.
    * Nanao — Green-haired female that seems to be tomboy-ish.
If would like to know more details of the characters and their Seiyuus you can visit here (http://)

Regarding on how to install these themes is very simple if you are a windows 7 user, you extract the files you downloaded and double clicking the theme automatically installs and changes the theme for the one you chosen.
Now if you have windows XP, you have to do it all manually. First off the themepack files are like zip files so you can extract the files you need. I used 7zip, so I just right-clicked the themepack file and chose the "extract here" option. Now you should have the wav sound files and the wallpapers, copy the files and paste them in C:\Windows\Media now you have change the sounds manually on your settings so go here Start>Control panel>Hardware and sound>Sound>Sounds you browse and select sounds in their respective actions,it shouldn't be hard to relate the file name to the action. I put the modified version of Madobe Nanami for Windows xp, so you just run the exe file.
Now if you have problem that the sounds don't play with the system, you either disable all sound effects on your sound device or do a dll cleanup using programs like ccleaner.

But wait! I have more
Some of you might remember the video Bad Apple right?

what made it more special is that many fans made from remixes to stop-motion of the same video.
so now a fan has made a screensaver out the Bad apple video

the download link is here (http://www.mediafire.com/?z9w28sdodavkir1)
The instructions are at the description of this video but I'll quote them

Note that you'll need a recent version of .NET framework to be able to run this

Quick tutorial:
1. Install Microsoft .NET framework 4(or later)
2. Extract all the files into any directory
3. Right-click BadApple!!.scr(The extension is hidden by default, so it's the one that looks like an executable) and select 'Install'
4. Go to screensaver settings in Windows and set it up as you'd like.

In the screensaver-specific options, the upper checkbox forces it to play in the original resolution(tiny) as well as causing it to play until you right-click and select exit, while the lower one changes the transparency to the normal opaque white color.

to make the music sound in the screensaver go to the screensaver settings and Browse on where it says BGM

And one more to end the desktop goodies we have some sort of 3d and 2d desktop buddy, or whatever name they have for it.

by this time I am very sleepy so I will just give you the link and you figure it out how to download them on your own. You can find K-on! Vocaloid, Haruhi and even Touhou chibi desktop characters to have them dancing on your screen.
Edit: before I left I noticed that there isn't many distributed free anymore, I will look for them later

all the download links aren't mine so credit to those people.
well there you have it, enjoy

Edit:  this is a picture on how the desktop should look like

OMG I want that screensaver. :(
Do you have any idea if it works on Vista too?
Also, how do I check my version of .NET Framework? I think I only have 3. >_<

Edit:
Also, do you mind if I "steal" this to post in another forum? :p
